ICC T20 WORLD CUP 2022

October 16, 2022

Richie Berrington

Hobart / Vipaluna, Victoria, Australia

Bellerive Oval

Scotland

Pre Match Media Conference

Q. You guys had a great start to the World Cup last year, qualifying into the Super 12. Does that give you extra confidence to have a repeat performance?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: Yeah, I think it shows that at this level we can mix it with the best, and obviously the way we beat Bangladesh in a tight game, and we were behind the 8-ball, I think shows how good we can be, and I think we will take good confidence from that going forward into this group.

Q. Heading into the first game tomorrow, what is the main goal for the team in the World Cup and what is the personal goal for you?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: Win the first three games would be nice. Look, obviously to get through the group would be a special achievement. I think it's a pretty tough group. We're going to probably have to win two games of cricket.

Then personally it would just be about contributing, hopefully putting in a Man of the Match performance with the bat and doing my job behind the stumps with the gloves.

Q. Looking at the West Indian side and what people are used to, what are you expecting from them?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: It is a different West Indies side, but these guys have got a lot of experience. They play in other leagues all around the world. We won't be taking anything for granted and expect them to come out and play a good game of cricket.

Q. You talked a bit before about the lead-up and playing in the warmup matches. Do you wish you were able to play more T20 games in the lead-up, namely playing One Day Internationals?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: Yeah, I think it would have been ideal, but you can't really do much about the weather. Having said that, we've come off a lot of domestic cricket back home, a lot of the ODI cricket, so the guys are prepped and ready. It's just about little adjustments for the T20 stuff.

Q. Who is a player that we should keep an eye on during the tournament?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: I want to say everyone, but if I was to pick someone, I'd always keep an eye out for Michael Leask. He's never far away from doing something pretty special.

Q. Obviously a few days now in Hobart. How have you found the conditions?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: It's been a bit colder than I think we were expecting, but we're pretty used to that. But this is my third time here, so it's good to be back in Hobart.

Q. You've played a bit of cricket at Bellerive Oval then?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: Yeah, we played here in the 2015 World Cup, and we did another sort of prep tour for that World Cup in 2014, so been here those two times.

Q. Obviously as you might have mentioned before, big challenge with the West Indies side. Who's the biggest watching player? Who do you have to keep a close on eye in the game tomorrow?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: To be honest, I think you've got to keep an eye on all of them. They're all match winners and good players in their own right, so I don't think I can really single any of them out. They're all level. We'll give it our best shot and we'll hopefully come out with a win.

Q. Has the team makeup been decided on yet, or still just depending on the wicket and the weather and things like that tomorrow?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: I mean, as far as I'm aware, it's not been decided. I think I'll have to look at conditions, as well, because it does change quite quickly here. There's been a bit of rain around. We had a good look at the wicket yesterday, but it changes very quickly with the rain around.

Q. How do you rank your team in this World Cup?

RICHIE BERRINGTON: I think we've got as good a chance as anyone in this group. I think it's going to be tough, like I said, but two out of three games we're probably going to have to win, and we've played against all three teams in the recent years and beaten them, so we're up for the challenge.
