NL DIVISION SERIES: PADRES VS DODGERS

October 13, 2022

Tony Gonsolin

San Diego, California, USA

Petco Park

Los Angeles Dodgers

Workout Day Press Conference

Q. Tony, considering your final outing of the regular season and just preparing for tomorrow, is there anything that's kind of been a focus for you the last few days that you've had down or even when you've been watching the Padres offense and their lineup? Is there anything that's stuck out to you in how you want to attack them?

TONY GONSOLIN: Well, yeah, I haven't done much different than I have kind of all season. Just getting my body ready to go. Mentally trying to get myself prepared to go, and had a really good bullpen the other day, and then just making sure all my things are working, all my pitches are working, and then just going out there and trying to execute the game plan.

Q. Do you kind of look at tomorrow like you did those first couple starts this season when you said you're just going to kind of go as hard as you could for as long as you could, just kind of given the restrictions on your workload right now?

TONY GONSOLIN: Yeah, I'm not going to try to pretend like I have a plan. I'm just going to go out there and execute pitches. And whenever Doc tells me I'm done, I'm going to ask to go more, and he's going to say no, and that'll be it.

Q. What are the things you've learned from your past postseason experience that you kind of take into this year and then into tomorrow?

TONY GONSOLIN: I mean, just go out there and throw strikes, try to stay ahead of guys and attack the zone.

Q. You've seen the Padres a fair amount this year. How much do you anticipate having to shift from what you've done against them earlier this year?

TONY GONSOLIN: Yeah, just trying to go out there and execute pitches and throw strikes and then try to feel out what their approach kind of is and then make the adjustments and play that little chess game.

Q. How much were you able to get stretched out over the workout periods, and how much do you feel like you'll be able to go tomorrow if needed?

TONY GONSOLIN: I mean, I threw four innings in our little workout thingy on Saturday. That's when I threw. So I feel like I'm good to go however many we need.

Q. Obviously the last month has been kind of unusual for you, but how would you describe your feel for your pitches and the intensity at which you're throwing them compared to maybe mid-season?

TONY GONSOLIN: Yeah, like I said earlier, I had a really good bullpen the other day. I felt like a lot of things clicked in that pen, and then just going out there and seeing how well I can execute all these pitches.

Q. How important was it to get that one outing in in October just to kind of know your physical readiness against a team?

TONY GONSOLIN: Yeah, it felt good to throw against guys wearing a different color than us. To have some real game action, it's a different feel definitely. But yeah, it felt good to get back out there and show that I can still do it.

Q. Going back a couple years, you started Game 6 of the World Series in 2020 in that bubble atmosphere, all of the weirdness that came with that. How much different do you think it is to start this game here in enemy territory, Game 3, Petco Park, presumably creating an atmosphere unlike what you experienced in 2020?

TONY GONSOLIN: Yeah, we're fortunate enough to play here at Dodger Stadium, and we get 45-, 50,000 people every night when we play. Can't imagine it's any more loud than that. Yeah, I'm excited to go out there and throw strikes.

Q. When did you find out you were starting tomorrow?

TONY GONSOLIN: Yeah, when I got the news, it was pretty cool. Definitely looking forward to throwing Game 3, and we'll see what happens.
