AL DIVISION SERIES: GUARDIANS VS YANKEES

October 11, 2022

Scott Effross

New York, New York, USA

Yankee Stadium

New York Yankees

Pregame 1 Press Conference

Q. I know you were looking forward to being part of the postseason with the team. How frustrated are you by what's transpired over the last couple days?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Yeah, obviously very disappointed and frustrated. You know, but it's baseball. These things happen. Just kind of disappointed I won't be able to go out there and help the team.

But this team, this bullpen specifically has been super resilient all year. You know, whoever gets the ball in the bullpen out there, you know, tonight and throughout the series, I know will do a great job. Just wish I was out there to kind of be able to help them out.

Q. Could you just tell us what you felt after the Orioles game and then Friday after batting practice?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Yeah, it was just like mild soreness, I thought. Just kind of end-of-the-year, normal soreness. Really since then, it just kind of stayed and lingered. Really no specific event kind of triggered it. We thought we were staying on top of it, and it felt pretty good to keep throwing and go out there.

I think what we just kind of came to was it was staying around for a little too long and we decided to get it checked out, not thinking it would be as major as it was. But pictures came back and obviously got the unfortunate news.

But you know, really there was no one specific, like, moment or pitch or anything that I would say kind of tipped off to this happening.

Q. Did you go into the MRI thinking it would be a possibility?

SCOTT EFFROSS: I was a little taken aback. Obviously you know when you go in there, there's the possibility of finding something you don't want to see.

For me, I think it was kind of shocking. Obviously I think every pitcher thinks it's shocking hearing that news. But, yeah, I was really not expecting that.

Q. Did the MRI just show the ulnar was torn or anything else?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Just the ulnar.

Q. Do you know when the surgery is and who is going to do?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Still going over that. As soon as possible. Want to get it in and start the rehab process as soon as possible.

Q. When was the MRI, Saturday?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Yeah, this weekend.

Q. And you got the results back the same day?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Yeah. But like I said, still going over the surgery details and get in there as soon as possible to start on the rehab.

Q. Still being confident with the guys in the bullpen, what do you like specifically about the way the relievers are shaping up?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Yeah, since I've been here, you know, we've had a lot of shifting parts, a lot of moving parts, guys going down, guys coming back, and really, just everyone down there has been super resilient. Everyone has taken the ball when they needed to do and done their job, and the starting pitching has been great.

I'm expecting the same thing moving forward, and obviously like I said, whoever gets the ball, I'm very confident in, so it will be fun to watch as a fan now, I guess. And obviously I'll cheer them on, but like I said, obviously disappointing not to be able to be out there and join them.

Q. What is the timeline now for your recovery?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Yeah, I think I've known people who have gone through it, so I know the general timeline of 12 to 18 months. We haven't really nailed that down yet. I guess that depends when the surgery gets started. Obviously want to get out there as safely and as soon as possible. I know it will take some time and I trust the training staff here to kind of help me with that.

Q. Have you talked to some of the guys like Jameson or Severino about this, and who else have you talked to about the recovery and what it takes?

SCOTT EFFROSS: Yeah, I have, and the support I've gotten in the clubhouse so far has been really remarkable. A lot of guys have been through it, like Jameson, like you mentioned; guys I played with in Chicago have kind of reached out and talked who have gone through it as well. I'll reach out and ask questions if I need to, but like I said, those guys have been great so far.

Q. Any plans for a second opinion? Some pretty good surgeons out west where you started this year.

SCOTT EFFROSS: Sure, yeah. We are still kind of going through that process I guess.
