Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Welcome to the 2022 Presidents Cup here at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. We're going to get started with our pairings for Round 1 foursomes.

At this time, I'd like to turn it over to John Mutch from the match committee, who will oversee the pairings process.

JOHN MUTCH: Welcome to Round 1 pairings at the Presidents Cup held here at Quail Hollow. Thanks for being with us. The competition will have 30 matches. The team that wins 15 1/2 points will win the competition. Should each team win 15 points, the competition will be a tie, and the teams will share the Presidents Cup.

Round 1 will have five foursomes matches. 10 of the 12 players from each team will be selected to play. Players are required to play in at least one of the first four rounds. Matches tied after 18 holes will not be extended. Each team will earn one-half point.

The United States team is the defending team so the United States captain has the option of selecting first or deferring the first selection to the international team captain. Davis?

DAVIS LOVE III: We'll defer.

JOHN MUTCH: The United States team has deferred. Trevor, you will select first for Match 1.

TREVOR IMMELMAN: We go with Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama.

DAVIS LOVE III: We'll go with Tony Finau and Max Homa.

JOHN MUTCH: The United States team has selected Tony Finau and Max Homa.

The first tee time is 1:05 p.m. The international team will have the honor on the 1st tee for each round. Tomorrow's forecast is 95 degrees. Chance of storms in the afternoon, 20 percent, and winds out of the northwest 15 to gusts of 25. Good luck, gentlemen.

Q. Question for Davis. I think one of the most interesting things is who Morikawa would pair with because D.J.'s not here. What appealed to you about Cam Young, and what makes that matchup work?

DAVIS LOVE III: They were lining up to play with Cam Young. Obviously, Collin had the experience. A very similar type pairing. You get a guy that drives it really long and really straight and a guy that's really steady, great ball striker.

This team was a little bit different than ones we've had in the past. There was a lot of obvious pairings, and there was a lot of guys that really get along well. So the obvious ones made the other ones a little bit harder because everyone does get along well, and there's not really anybody that you say, well, that guy's hard to pair.

It's just hard to pick two to sit out. That's our problem. But that one was pretty natural right off the bat for us.

Q. Is there anything Trevor could have said that would have led to a different outcome than Cantlay and Schauffele in No. 1?

DAVIS LOVE III: Yes.

THE MODERATOR: Gentlemen, thank you. Good luck tomorrow.
