DAVIS CUP FINALS

September 16, 2022

Cameron Norrie

Team Great Britain

Press Conference

B. VAN de ZANDSCHULP/C. Norrie

6-4, 6-2

Great Britain - Great Britain

The Netherlands - 1

THE MODERATOR: Your thoughts on today's match.

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I thought Botic came out and played a high level throughout the whole match and played a very complete match. Didn't give a serve away. I gave my serve away once in the first set, once in the second set. That was the difference today.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Obviously you didn't start very well the other day, but you seemed to settle in, playing well by the end. Today, how did you feel on the court going out there?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I wanted to make it a point to start well. I felt better. I started I thought great. Yeah, I just missed a couple first balls in that first game, got broken.

Yeah, it's not ideal. Like I said, I would usually have a lot of chances to get back into the match. Botic gave me nothing. So all credit to him on that front.

Q. Is it just one of these things that sometimes the opponent on the day just plays better, doesn't give you a shot at it?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, he was better than me. Like I said, I just gifted him two service games. He didn't really have to do much to break me in the end. That's not a player that's of my ranking, and that's me on a really bad day.

I mean, like I said, all credit to him. He took care of his service games. I had a lot of deuces, a lot of chances on his games. What it came down to is just I didn't take care of my service games.

There were a couple there that I just missed some easy balls, a couple double-faults. That's not the level that I have. That's not the level that I'm capable of. I'm disappointed with that.

It was a huge match for us, another must-win match. That's the beauty of Davis Cup, you can still lose and your team can still go through.

I'm really going to go out there and be really vocal in the doubles and support those boys. It's a big match for us.

Q. It's not over until Sunday for you guys. Looking forward to Kazakhstan on Sunday, what do you know about Alexander Bublik? You've played him before. What do you expect from that one?

CAMERON NORRIE: I played him once in US Open quallies a number of years ago. Yeah, I know he's extremely talented. He's got a great first serve. He's probably got some of the best hands on the tour with the dropshots and his volleys. He's got a really good backhand.

I think he likes these conditions. It's not too bouncy. It's pretty slow for him. It's a good serving court. I think it suits him really well.

I watched him a little bit yesterday against Taylor, and he's looking really comfortable and confident. I'm going to have to definitely up the performance today to have a chance with him.

Q. Dan said bouncing back after a defeat and having to come back out to the same court is quite rare for you guys. Is this something you've faced before? Is it easy for you to do?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I think it's great. You get a chance to prove yourself again. You want to kind of make changes from the match before. You're playing for your team and your country, so there's no time to dwell on that loss.

Today's loss, I'm going to look at it a little bit tonight and tomorrow. But, yeah, I'm going to come back as strong as I can on Sunday and I'm going to fight as hard as I can, like I did today.

Just unfortunate it wasn't my day today. But, yeah, I was really impressed with Botic and his level. Especially the last time we played, I played a very clean match on my serve and gave him absolutely nothing. He did that today to me.

Yeah, it was a big difference in level from him today than when I played him in Canada just recently. He was really, really vocal. Yeah, all credit to him. He played a really great match. I think he'd agree with me.

Q. Botic served I think nine aces in the first set. What is difficult about his serve to return?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, great first serve. I felt he hit the spots really well today. I felt last time I played him, I was on a lot of the returns and I was able to get a lot of first serves back.

Today he was mixing it up really well. Especially on that deuce side, he was really hitting the T well. I know he likes the wide a lot on the deuce side and the slider.

He was mixing it up well, pretty proactive on the first ball, too. He had a good day serving. Yeah, I haven't checked the numbers or anything, but I'm guessing they're pretty high.

Q. You've been extremely consistent during the summer. Even when you haven't necessarily played well, you've made it a match like the previous one. Something like this, a match like this, more one-sided, was that bound to happen? What do you make of this result in general?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I think I answered it already.

Just I didn't play a complete match on my serve. That was the difference. Yeah, I mean, not too much more I can say. Something I'll look into a little bit.

I think it's very important going into the indoor season as well, playing complete matches on my serve, not giving that away, being very stingy on my service games.

Q. Obviously it has been a quick turnaround from the US Open. How difficult has that been? Very different conditions over there to playing indoors here.

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, very different. It's the same for everyone. Yeah, obviously I went somewhat deep in the US Open, so I came back basically straightaway and flew here straightaway. I've been preparing as quick as I can, trying to be physically ready, mentally ready for this.

It's great having the crowd behind me. Yeah, there's no excuses there with that. It's the same for everyone. Like I said earlier, I think in my last interview, it's great to kind of get these matches indoors before some of the indoor tournaments later. I think it's going to come in handy.
