Kenwood Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Here with Angel Yin. Nice round today, 5-under 67. You didn't have a par on the back nine. Front nine today, but it's the back nine for you.

ANGEL YIN: Yeah.

Q. Walk me through those holes. I saw a double, I saw an eagle right after that.

ANGEL YIN: Yeah, so the first hole I like just hit like the worst shot of the day. I was pretty consistent. I think I hit like seven greens on the front nine, so I was pretty much putting for birdie.

The putts were a little far so didn't really make a lot of them, but I made the turn, I was on 10, which is the first hole, and I just completely hooked it so bad. It was just off the green.

And then with how wet the fairways are the greens are really firm, so I couldn't really gauge it right. And then the putt didn't break, so made a bogey.

My caddie was like, bounce back. So I made a birdie on the next hole.

And then the par-3 I hit this horrible chip. I hit it short. I think I hit the tee shot because the tee boxes are so wet, I think the mud got on the ball because it was flying really bad and was really weird.

And I hit a great shot, so it was on the green. Bad chip; hit a putt. Then I had like a three-footer and missed it. I was like, ah, double. He was like, no, double bounce back the next one.

So then I eagled it and then just birdie, birdie, birdie.

Then on 8, which was my 17th hole, I three-putted off the green, so technically it's a two-putt, but I three-putted off the green because I hit it too hard.

And then I was luckily -- I made a birdie on No. 18, 9, so that was are the nice.

Just kind of crazy on the back nine.

Q. How did that eagle happen?

ANGEL YIN: I drove the green and then I had probably like a 30-footer and then I sank it. It was pretty cool because it was enough speed to just drop in, so I was like, ah, yes. It was good.

Q. How do you keep your emotions and your expectations in check when you're on that kind of rollercoaster?

ANGEL YIN: Just keep playing.

And then my caddie, Donny, is just really encouraging, so it's good.

He was telling me about like Real Madrid. Best comeback ever, so bounce back. It was right after my double. Yeah, it's more about having fun and trying to keep it level headed.

At one point I was 3-under, falling down a lot, so I was like, okay, I got to get it back together.

Yeah, it's tough. Course is not that easy, especially with the difference between the green and the fairway and how wet it is.

The greens are quite firm actually.

Q. Heading into the weekend, going to be in the mix. How excited are you to be at the top of the leaderboard with Saturday and Sunday yet to go?

ANGEL YIN: Yeah, it's exciting because I've been playing good golf. I was really looking forward to Europe but Thursday of Evian I woke up with a bad back and I couldn't walk. I tried to push through but just didn't happen.

That entire Europe trip went to shambles. It was just terrible. That really sucks, because it was two majors in a row and you're going overseas. Expenses are high, too, so you're taking a huge hit. You're like really down on yourself.

When you have a bad back, I never really realized the little things you can do, like tying your shoes, putting on your pants, going to the restroom, like waking up and not rolling out of bed.

It's just so crazy. And then so I started working out again. Last week was really unfamiliar. I like wasn't really sure what's going on with my body not -- like I was hitting my 8-iron like 15 yards short sometimes, like 10 yards, because I didn't want the to go after it because it was kind of traumatizing.

Q. I'm going to tease a piece of content that the LPGA Tour social team has worked on. Heard you met Ickey Woods this week. Did you getting to the Ickey Shuffle?

ANGEL YIN: I did the Ickey Shuffle. That was fun. He is really nice. I mean, I didn't get to really talk to him because we did the shuffle and then he left, but it was pretty cool.

Q. Have you done the shuffle on the course at all this week?

ANGEL YIN: No. Try to just keep calm. I mean, my back nine wasn't calm, but it was so funny. Angela came up to me and she was like, I'm so jealous. He's like a living legend.

I was like, yeah. Yeah, sorry, but that was pretty cool.
