CANADIAN PACIFIC WOMEN'S OPEN

August 23, 2022

Monet Chun

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

The Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: All right, here with Monet Chun, who is a CP Women's Open sponsor invite, Canadian national, and also most recently the runner-up at the U.S. Women's Amateur. Very exciting finish.

So welcome to our press room and the CP Women's Open.

MONET CHUN: Thank you.

THE MODERATOR: What are you most looking forward to this week in your sponsor invite in your home country?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, this is my first professional event, so I think just the experience overall. I'm excited to see all the players out there and just play the golf course this week.

THE MODERATOR: You excited about the strength of the field? How does that make you feel seeing all these really good players in the field this week and getting to compete against them?

MONET CHUN: I'm definitely going to be nervous for sure, but hopefully just have fun out there and enjoy it as much as possible.

THE MODERATOR: Some fellow Canadians in the field, too, most notably Brooke Henderson, who may have been someone you watched growing up. Does that make you excited, sharing the course with her?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, for sure. I think the last time I shared a course with her is Ontario Am some couple years ago, so it's big that I get to play this event with her.

THE MODERATOR: That's right. Brooke is not that much older than you.

MONET CHUN: Yeah.

THE MODERATOR: Anyone with questions for Monet?

Q. The Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, you've been around a few times?

MONET CHUN: No, it is my first time out here.

Q. But today have you played at all?

MONET CHUN: I got to play nine holes yesterday; I started on 16, so not too much. I didn't see too much of the golf course, but excited to get out again today.

Q. How does it compare to what you played in in the U.S. Amateur?

MONET CHUN: Definitely a different setup. Seems like the greens are a little bit faster this week, so hopefully I'll adjust well to that.

Q. Superintendant says they'll be 12.5; is that too much of a problem for you?

MONET CHUN: Hopefully not. Hopefully not. (Smiling.) Yeah, we'll see where the week takes me.

Q. You've traveled a fair bit. Canadian Women's Amateur and then the U.S. Women's Amateur and now you're here. This is a question I would ask anybody in this situation, but are you tired from all that travel?

MONET CHUN: I am. I slept two days straight after the U.S. Am, so I am a little bit tired I think. Both the U.S. Am and this tournament wasn't planned until the Canadian Am, so I'm just excited to be here and hope that I can make it through the week.

Q. Have you met any of the pros out here or talked to anyone? Any names that come to mind?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, no, I met Alena Sharp this morning, I guess yesterday and did the clinic with her this morning.

Morgan Pressel, I met her last week at Chamber's Bay, but seeing her here is good. I have some friendly faces and hopefully meet some more people the rest of the week.

Q. And then Chamber's Bay, I think they had the men's U.S. Open there once and it was a weird -- looked like a weird golf course anyway that you don't see in North America. What was your take on it?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, definitely it's a links-style golf course so it's a different play from the rest of the golf course setups we have in Canada and in the States. It was definitely playing a bit differently, and I had a good kind of course management throughout the week and I think that helped.

Q. You made it to the final and your opponent, the Japanese golfer, just played unbelievably. What's your take from the whole -- I mean, you finished second. Anyone would put a feather in their cap for that. You didn't perform as great as you probably wanted in the final round. What's your? Take overall then?

MONET CHUN: I mean, I think it was my day -- like an off day for me. Definitely didn't hit it as well as I wanted to and putt as well as I wanted to.

She played tremendously, so I think she deserved it. It was a good match and I had a lot of fun.

Q. What do you think of all the youngsters that qualified yesterday over The Marshes? The youth of today, there is some tremendous young ladies coming up. What do you think of these kids?

MONET CHUN: We have a bright future for junior golf and for Canadian golf as well. I'm pretty excited for myself to be here and some friendly faces to be here as well. I'm just excited. I think it's going to make me a lot more comfortable, so pretty happy about that.

Q. In your preparation, how is this week different than, you know, you won the Canadian Women's Amateur championship, tremendous performance at the U.S. Amateur. How is your preparation impacted, or what have you done different or stuck to this week?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, try to keep it as same as possible, as any other week. With the clinics and the pro-ams going on it looks a little bit different from usual, but I'm trying to enjoy it as much as possible. Just get through the next couple days and do as best as possible to prep for the upcoming week.

Q. You're still in school, correct?

MONET CHUN: Yes, I am.

Q. Are you falling behind?

MONET CHUN: We haven't started yet, so I am not, I'm happy to say. We start on the 29th, so I'll be leaving right after this to catch up on that.

THE MODERATOR: As you said, first professional start. Did you set any goals to sort of manage expectations, and sort of limit the pressure that you put on yourself going into this week, first professional start?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, I don't know what to expect so I haven't really set any expectations for myself. I'm just hoping to get out there, play the best I can, and just get off the course happy. Yeah.

THE MODERATOR: Awesome. You asked about her school. Michigan Wolverine?

MONET CHUN: Yes.

THE MODERATOR: So looking forward to telling the team about this when you leave afterwards?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, pretty excited about this. I'm pretty sure my teammates have been texting me all week and they're pretty excited too.

Yeah, I hope my experience here will help me in the up coming school year.

THE MODERATOR: And final question from me: How did this sponsor invite come about? What was those conversations like? How did you feel when you were invited to play here?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, so I got the invite from winning the Canadian Am this year. It's something that I was kind of aiming towards so I knew what was coming up.

I think just being here, it just feels unreal. I'm pretty happy. I'm excited to be here. Yeah, the process was I finished the round on the final day and they told me that I have the sponsor invite to the CP.

Yeah, that was pretty much it.

Q. Just wondering, you mentioned this event, the U.S. Amateur wasn't necessarily on your schedule this summer. The two days of sleep after the U.S. tournament. How have you processed it all and what has the summer I guess meant to you in your career as you made you're way through it?

MONET CHUN: Yeah, this summer has just I guess shown me how much I've improved over the last couple years. But, yeah, I'm just trying to juggle everything, get through one tournament at a time, and as soon as the summer is over I'm heading back to school.

And so I have a lot more events coming up. Yeah, just trying to get through.

THE MODERATOR: Thank you so much.

MONET CHUN: Thank you.

THE MODERATOR: Good luck this week.
