BMW CHAMPIONSHIP

August 19, 2022

Adam Scott

Wilmington, Delaware, USA

Wilmington Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. How would you characterize the round? I know there was the one blip there on 17.

ADAM SCOTT: Overall, I felt really in control today. When you're playing that way, it always could be a couple better, and a poor shot on 17 was quite costly. It's a good reminder for the weekend that I've really got to keep it under control and don't want to have too many get off the map and get out of position around here. But I kept it in position really well all day and had so many good looks and was cruising there for a while.

But I'm in great shape going into the weekend. I don't even know when the last time I led a tournament was.

Q. Sounds like you're focusing more on the positives than the one negative that kind of popped up there; am I correct?

ADAM SCOTT: Oh, yeah. I mean, last week I kind of got it done with the putter, and this week it feels like the game is taking shape a bit, which is a nice position, and I played very free and was able to let go a little bit today and swing freely and rolled a few in. That's a nice feeling. I'd like that kind of feeling over the weekend.

Q. Does that surprise you when you say you can't remember the last time you led a golf tournament?

ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, because that's what I'm trying to do is win, but the competition is tough out here, and I certainly haven't had my best stuff for quite a while. It's been a battle for sure. But that's how this game is.

I'd like to make the most of this position now over the next 36 holes.

Q. Are you good with the format they have next week now? It's been a few years to get used to it. What do you make of it?

ADAM SCOTT: I think I've seen them all. I've given up coming up with a better solution. I think so. I don't know. I don't know if there is a best format for our Playoffs or not. We've had so many. Not everyone is going to like every format. It depends which end of it you're on.

Q. How did the course compare with yesterday given another day of sunshine?

ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, definitely some spots are drying out. Not the whole course. Generally it's the greens that run away from the fairway are drying out. I think you must have seen some balls skip through the back today. Some greens are definitely drying out, and you've got to pay attention. Some fairways are running out.

The greens, even though we're so few guys here, the greens are certainly nicer in the morning than the afternoon. They're very pure.

Q. When you mentioned your game not being in order for some time, as long as you've played this game, can you give an answer to why it hasn't been and how it changes?

ADAM SCOTT: Well, I think there's so many parts to old broken pros trying to put it all together. It would be a long answer.

You know, I think at certain different -- can I blame it on coronavirus? Is that an easy answer?

I think there's points in your life that there's different levels of focus on different things, and it's not for lack of trying, but trying to manage myself has been challenging the last couple years.

Q. Let me ask it this way then. Could you talk about your optimism level when you arrived in Memphis?

ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, I felt like I'd been playing really well at Wyndham and Detroit and actually had a bit of a tough time on the greens, which I haven't been for a long time. Just felt like it should all come together, and I tried to stay calm and put it all together, and it happened in one way or another in Memphis, and I think I got a bit of confidence out of that, out of just having a result, even a top 5. It felt like a result rather than feeling pretty good about things and finishing 20th.

Q. Even though you might have played better tee to green at other places?

ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, absolutely, just to have a result, the confidence went up, and I think it allowed me a chance to relax a bit more coming here, like it's a bit more under control. I felt like that on the course.
