OMNIUM BANQUE NATIONALE

August 12, 2022

Nick Kyrgios

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Press Conference

H. HURKACZ/N. Kyrgios

7-6, 6-7, 6-1

THE MODERATOR: Nick, another three-set battle with Hubie. Talk about the match today.

NICK KYRGIOS: Yeah, just amazing serving. He's got one of the best serves in the world. I had opportunities in the first set, break points, break points in the second. Obviously that was pretty crucial because just running on fumes a bit towards the end. I think it's normal.

I feel good. I feel confident. Now I got three days, three or four days, of rest until Cincinnati. I'm going to use that, really capitalize on just rest and recovery.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. What especially are you retaining of your winning streak?

NICK KYRGIOS: What?

Q. What are you retaining of the past winning streak you just had?

NICK KYRGIOS: Oh, winning streak.

I honestly don't care. I played good tennis. I've been on the road for nearly three months. I've been away from home, away from my mum, away from my dad. They're not very well at the moment. So I don't really care about 'no winning streak'.

As long as I'm not at home, I'm on the road, I want to try to put in good performances, make it worthwhile being here. I don't care about records and any of that sort of stuff. I just want to make the most of my trip.

I got two more tournaments left before I can go home.

Q. There was obviously a change of momentum between the second and third set. Was fatigue creeping in? What happened there?

NICK KYRGIOS: I mean, yeah, my body hasn't been feeling great the last week. When I'm already warm... I was feeling the abdominal a little bit before the match, my knees hurt. Obviously when you're playing and you stop playing for like five to 10 minutes, it doesn't help your body. My body was so stiff after that, I couldn't move properly. My abdominal was hurting.

I mean, it's within the rules. I'm not going to complain. I completely stiffened up. After the second set, like I'm not a machine, I'm a human. My knees were sore, my back was sore, my abdominal was sore. I was trying to stay moving, but I just stiffened up.

Q. Any concern for Cincy?

NICK KYRGIOS: No. My body was warm and then I was cold, so...

Q. You're going to be seeded at US Open now. Does that change something in your mindset, or...

NICK KYRGIOS: I'm just glad I can't play like Medvedev or someone first round. That's all I really care.

Q. You've been giving us really great answers all week, kind of well-thought-out, nice answers. It seems like maybe you don't hate the media as much as you used to. Are you enjoying this whole process a bit more nowadays in terms of this back and forth with the media, also the interaction with the fans, everything you're going through?

NICK KYRGIOS: Yeah, I mean, the fans are great. I mean, without the fans, there's not really any excitement. There's no sport really without fans.

As for media, I couldn't care less. I do this because I have to be here and I don't want to get fined, so...

I mean, it's routine. I don't really enjoy it, to be honest. I'd rather not be here right now.

Q. Just before Wimbledon, during Wimbledon, you said that Wimbledon was your best chance at a slam. You're playing probably at your best right now. Do you feel with a lot of confidence going into US Open?

NICK KYRGIOS: Yeah, I feel good. As I said, US Open still is two and a half weeks away. I have Cincinnati next week. That's all I'm focusing on. I'm focusing on today, tonight, recovery, food, then just resting, then Cincinnati. That's where my mind is at.

I'm not even thinking about US Open. There's still 128 players at US Open who are capable of doing some great things. Obviously my form and the way I feel, I'm confident, but at the same time I'm not going to be looking ahead at all.

Yeah, I feel confident. I'm not going to go and say I'm a favorite or something. I feel like I'm playing well. Still got to play a lot of tennis before then, so I'm going to focus on that.

Q. You're wearing a Celtics hat. You're a fan. There's been a lot of talks about Duran wanting to play with Smart. Would you like to see Tatum and Jaylen break up or see that same team?

NICK KYRGIOS: I love Jaylen Brown. I love Tatum. I love that team. I hope it doesn't change. Obviously I understand the Celtics are a win-now franchise. I think Jaylen Brown is too valuable to give up. I think he's one of the best two-way forwards in the league, so I hope not.

Q. You will stay in Montreal one day or two before you go to Cincy?

NICK KYRGIOS: No. Unfortunately the flights are disgusting. I need to get out of here as soon as possible. I'll probably leave tomorrow.

THE MODERATOR: Thanks, everyone.
