THE AMUNDI EVIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

July 21, 2022

Lydia Ko

Evian-les-Bains, France

Evian Resort Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Bogey-free 66 today. That's a solid way to start a major championship. How do you feel you played today?

LYDIA KO: Yeah, our whole group played really well. I think 5-under, 5-under, 4-under. So it's nice when everybody is playing well and you're able to feed off each other.

I gave myself quite a few looks and I wasn't able to take like advantage of some, but I think to be able to finish with a birdie on the last, it's a solid way to start this week for sure.

Q. So bunch of birdies on the card. What was dialed in for you today and were they long putts? What was the story of those birdies?

LYDIA KO: I think I had a couple like tap-ins where I just literally just walked up and hit it without having to read the lie. I think when I was out of position I was able to hit like good approach shots to recover from there.

So I think I stayed pretty patient and very even keel, and that's important at any event, but especially at majors.

So I did that well, and I think that was kind of the key. Like nothing -- I didn't hit like too many wayward shots or too many like silly putts. I think that's why I was able to just have it all together and it didn't get like too out of hand at any point.

Q. Sarah is over talking to Jin Young right now and she had mentioned the fun of playing with you and Anna, all past champions. What's the experience like when you're out there with friends, out having fun on a beautiful day, but also you know you're all trying to get to the same goal, so driving each other?

LYDIA KO: Yeah, I think the last few years, I don't know if that's how the pairings worked, but I played with past champions quite a bit. Obviously it's nice playing with two past champions. They manage their way around the golf course in ways I'm trying to learn from them as well. Especially Jin Young, her being the No. 1 ranked player, there is always something to learn from.

Yeah, I think we fed off each other really well. We all have like different games, but it's cool like how we're all able to break down the course even though we have different ball flights, hits different distances.

Q. Just one final question. I know you said no croissants this week. What do you like to eat while you're here?

LYDIA KO: Obviously a lot of Evian. Yeah, keep Franck happy.

Q. It's a hot week; there is plenty of water here.

LYDIA KO: Yes, a lot of Evian. I've had a lot of like chicken supreme. I ordered three people's worth of food the other day and I was embarrassed, so I told in-room dining that there might have been two people in the room, but there was only one. I pretty much finished 95% of the food, so a little shameful moment, but the food here is really good.

I think Evian, the town itself, has grown a lot since I first came. Like there was almost like maybe one or two Asian restaurants as well and now that's been like a big thing.

I know like players go to like the pizza shop, like Thai place, and I've really been camping out at the Royale with my sister. So just kind of getting it done there.

And the hospitality and everything is so good that it's just like don't really need to go far to get the job done.

Q. Did you wake up to the fireworks last night?

LYDIA KO: Actually no. I think I did get like -- like during the middle of my sleep, but I was pretty deep in sleep.

The night before there was a pro-am party and I was trying to sleep and there was like club music, so that was a little different.

Yeah, no, deep sleep was good.

Q. And in your defense on the food, you spend all day walking up and down the side of a mountain. You've earned it.

LYDIA KO: That's true. But I ordered two juices, too. I ordered a lobster salad, a steak and a chicken supreme with fries, two green beans, and a spinach and two juices.

Q. I love you, Lydia Ko. And now you have two people in the room.

LYDIA KO: Yeah, now it's two, but then I order like three people in the room.

Yeah, that was embarrassing before my sister game and I was alone. I think actually the waitress might have laughed at me.

Q. That's okay. You earned it.

LYDIA KO: I would've laughed too, to be honest.
