THE 150TH OPEN

July 17, 2022

Richard Mansell

St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. Tough back nine?

RICHARD MANSELL: No, it wasn't tough. I was just not very good at all. It's very scorable out there. You're going to see some low scores. Disappointed not to play better, but that's golf.

Q. Does it feel like a missed opportunity then to have a good finish?

RICHARD MANSELL: Very much so. I was playing some good stuff on the front nine and had a three-putt. Maybe wanted it a bit too much. I was quite poor mentally, to be honest, which is something I need to go and work out. Disappointing day. Not really anything else to say.

Q. In terms of the experience, you said to me the other day it wasn't about the money, it was about the dream of playing at St Andrews. Putting aside the disappointment with the round today, give us a sense of what it's meant for you to be here for The 150th Open.

RICHARD MANSELL: Absolutely. Just walking up the last steps, you remind yourself, we're middle of the pack in the field. The grandstands are packed. There's people everywhere. That visual on the 18th tee is quite incredible.

So it's obviously been a special week. Disappointed not to play better, like I said. Had to fight the first two days. My game wasn't there. Felt like I played well yesterday, then was playing well today, and then just scored terribly.

Like I say, it's a missed opportunity, but I'll be back. Other majors, and like I say, I'm hoping to play better next time.

Q. Are you somebody who goes away and tries to draw points on what you need to work on or you just know yourself anyway?

RICHARD MANSELL: It was pretty obvious today. There were a couple of bad swings I didn't trust. A couple of things with my caddie that we spoke about that we weren't -- it just was weird. Like middle of the round, and we felt like I was playing a round at home. It's like what am I doing here? I'm actually on Sunday in a major. I need to kind of switch on a little bit.

Yeah, left a putt short on 11, a couple under, then three-putted. It was just silly. Yeah, just kind of then hit one out of bounds on 14.

Yeah, just really flat. Everything I tried just wasn't working. It's one of them days. That's golf. You can't beat yourself up too much. I feel like I kind of found something in my game. I'm looking forward to the next two weeks.

Q. What's coming up for you now? What are you playing in next?

RICHARD MANSELL: I'm playing at Hillside next week, and supposedly back up here for Fairmont. Obviously I'm planning to play as many as I can the next few weeks in the UK, but I'll look at my energy levels and go from there. Definitely playing next week.

Q. The Cazoo Open at Hillside, you know that course pretty well?

RICHARD MANSELL: Yeah, my caddie's from there as well. Looking forward to that one.
