THE 150TH OPEN

July 15, 2022

Tommy Fleetwood

St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, UK

Mixed Zone

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: Better day. I bogeyed the 2nd, and then it was always -- feels like tricky. You want to start off as well as you can. And played good really. Played really solid. It was nice to get the round going, especially from 9 through 16.

Making birdie on 16 felt great, felt like I was getting the round together. Just a shame that I couldn't quite just close the round out a bit better. 17 was playing very difficult. We played most of the holes into the wind, a few of the groups did today.

17 was playing very difficult, and then 18 I would have just liked to have made birdie. But overall can't be too displeased with shooting 3-under today and sticking around.

Q. You mention the the wind, though. I was talking about how it changed round 180 degrees. How challenging was that towards the end of the round?

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: I had my second shot into the 6th hole, and I was -- as I stood over it with my ball, the wind went flat calm. So I backed off it because I had too much club. By the time I went back in it, that was the switch. So it literally switched as I was over a shot.

From then on, luckily it didn't get too strong. But you're playing the first two into the wind, so you were kind of looking forward to having some downwind holes coming in, and we didn't get any pretty much.

Some holes played easy. Some holes played tougher. That's the way it is.

Q. Pretty pleased with where you are. You have a chance to get up there if you get in a good round on Saturday?

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: Like I said, I would have loved to have finished off a bit higher and been a bit closer because I'm pretty behind already. I'll press on over the weekend. The only thing I can do today is be around, stick around.

We'll see what happens. We don't know what the conditions are going to be like, what pin positions are going to be like. You don't know what game you're going to turn up with. Today was an improvement on yesterday. If I can improve over the weekend, we'll see what it is.

First of all, I'm happy that I put in a better performance today.
