THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 27, 2022

Stan Wawrinka

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

J. SINNER/S. Wawrinka

7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2

THE MODERATOR: Tough match today. How were you feeling out there?

STAN WAWRINKA: Yeah, it was a tough match. I'm disappointed with the way I was playing today, with the level I got. I think I have been pushing myself way better during practice. I was expecting more, and I'm for sure disappointed with the loss.

THE MODERATOR: Questions?

Q. Sorry for the question, because it's going to be about Jannik, but you were the first player who played in a Grand Slam against him. It was 2019. You won in the US Open. Today you lost, of course. The question is going to sound a bit silly, but I'm curious about that. Did you find him improved as a tennis player three years after, except the result?

STAN WAWRINKA: Yeah, for sure, improve. You can see his ranking. Ranking doesn't lie. He's been getting up a bit. He improve his game. He has a tough game to play with, already a difficult match back then.

Today he played better than me, and, yeah, he's a really good player, he's at the top of the game. He's really young. He still has a lot to improve to be at his best, but he will get there hopefully for him.

Q. Can you say what he has to improve more, from your point of view?

STAN WAWRINKA: I'm happy to talk after losing to him today. I'm sure he has a great team around him. He's young. He has all the future for him. Good luck to him to be at the top.

Q. Obviously it didn't go the way you wanted. Can you take any positives from the day?

STAN WAWRINKA: Yeah, for sure. There is some positive today. Right now I'm more disappointed than happy with what happened.

I think, as I say, I could have done much more. I was really frustrated in the match to see the level I was producing today.

Q. Do you think it's more a mental or physical problem working on what you want to do?

STAN WAWRINKA: I think I need to keep going, keep working out. For sure I'm thinking a bit too much. I'm looking for confidence, and I need wins for that. A match like that doesn't help. That's part of the process, and I need to stay positive.

Q. I read your thing in the Players' Tribune. When you write or say or post something like that, does it take a lot of pressure off to just get that off your shoulders? Do you feel you can play freer now that you have said it?

STAN WAWRINKA: Said what?

Q. On your Players' Tribune. Just everything about how you feel about coming back.

STAN WAWRINKA: No, no, the thing is when I play tennis, I put a lot of pressure on myself, because I don't want to lose first round. I want to win. I want to get back to the highest ranking. I want to keep winning a lot of matches. So the pressure always going to be there. That's a part of who I am playing, too, because I enjoy and I love it.

Q. I read your piece. Quite touching. It was published yesterday. I was quite impressed. Is the same today? You want to play another match now, as you wrote in the piece?

STAN WAWRINKA: Yeah, right now, as I say, it's difficult. I know I have a lot of frustration from the match, because I know where I am right now, and today I was not at all what I was hoping to produce during the match.

So I'm really frustrated with myself. I think the performance was not great, and again, I don't have any option than to go back, practice, to go back to work, keep trusting myself, because I really feel and believe that I can be back at a really high level.

Q. What are you going to do now? Will you relax or go back to the courts?

STAN WAWRINKA: No, I think, as I say, I need to go back to practice and keep doing what I'm trying to do, keep improving in the practice to hopefully get some wins.
