GENESIS SCOTTISH OPEN

July 8, 2022

Gary Woodland

North Berwick, Scotland

The Renaissance Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Very much a tale of two very different days for yourself. How do you reflect on your second round here at the Renaissance Club?

GARY WOODLAND: It was tough. It was a tough day. A lot of crosswinds. I didn't drive it as well as I did yesterday and that was really the difference. Outside of that, I played well. I hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in.

Had a couple lipouts but nice to get that little run. I had a big par putt on 2 and birdied the next three holes. It was nice to see a ball go in and hit some good putts. Nice to get back in it. That was more of a mental grind than anything out there. That's what you want, and that's what you expect when you come over here.

Q. Talking about that run of three birdies, how much is patience key? Because you know you're going to get bad breaks at times and the wind is not helping obviously, how much is patience a key factor?

GARY WOODLAND: A lot. I kept telling myself I was playing better. Continued to try to hit my targets, give myself a chance, knowing that you had a par 5 there on 3 which was nice to get a birdie. And then I hit some really good shots, quality shots the next couple holes and gave myself some chances. Gave myself a chance on 8 and a nice 2-putt on 9.

It was a nice finish and it will make dinner taste better, and I hope to sleep pretty well tonight after today.

Q. Give us a sense of the conditions with regard to the gust of winds. Seemed to be affecting a lot of people on the greens as well.

GARY WOODLAND: That's really the tough part is on the greens. I was hitting I think 6 was 110 yards. I was hitting 9-iron. I hit 9-iron 165 yards. It was just chipping shots which is awesome. It really is fun. When the sun went down, it got cold. Ball didn't go as far. It got a little more difficult. It's great, the imagination that you have to hit different shots, you've got to control the golf ball. It's great stuff.

Q. Just finally, you are firmly in the mix now heading into the weekend. How excited are you at the prospect of that?

GARY WOODLAND: Yeah, I'm excited that I'm playing well. I feel good. The golf course, it was my first time here. It's a golf course I really enjoy. If you drive the golf ball in play, you can really have some chances. So that's going to be a key for me this weekend but I'm excited about where I'm at.
