U.S. SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

June 25, 2022

Jay Haas

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA

Saucon Valley C.C. (Old Course)

Quick Quotes

Q. Just summary of the round, a little bit of up and down.

JAY HAAS: Yeah, it was a struggle. I wasn't sharp. It wasn't awful, but it could have been worse. After seven holes, I didn't hit a lot of good shots early on. I was only a couple over. I say only -- everybody else was making birdies, so I felt like I was out of it.

Starting at 9 I hit some better shots and made a couple putts.

Hit a really nice one at 16 and had about a seven-footer behind the hole there. Really wanted that one to get under par and missed.

Overall, when I was standing on the 9th tee, if somebody had said would you take even, I would have taken it for sure. Hopefully this was my bad hitting round. Tomorrow I can get back on and drive the ball better.

You know, I wasn't awful, but in a U.S. Open setup, you can't hit like I did.

Q. When your partner is also playing up and down, does that play a role into how your play goes?

JAY HAAS: Not necessarily. He got off to a bad start, bogeyed the first two. Then all of a sudden, he birdied 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and drove it on the fringe at 10. Looked like he was going to make his sixth birdie in a row.

He bogeyed 12 and made a triple at 15. It kind of derailed him for a while. He's a wonderful player, hitting it good, you can tell. He's relaxed, playing well, putting well. I expect him to go low tomorrow.

You say guys get going together, but I wish. It didn't happen to me today.

Q. Just course conditions today compared to yesterday and what you're anticipating for tomorrow.

JAY HAAS: The greens have remained kind of soft, and I don't see them getting that much firmer. There's not a lot of wind to dry them out. The heat will help that maybe a little bit. The ball is starting to run in the fairway a little bit, though.

The course is in immaculate condition. After all the rain we had on Thursday morning, you would think the balls would be plugging or picking up mud, but they're not doing that.

Congrats to the superintendent and the whole crew that set it up and worked countless hours. It's pretty incredible.
