THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 14, 2022

Archie Davies

Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. Great effort this morning and this afternoon?

ARCHIE DAVIES: Yeah, I was struggling the front nine a little bit. I parred both the par 5s, which you're looking to kind of make some ground on.

But then I got really hot in the middle of the round, 9 through 13. I chipped in from the long, thick rough on short right of 9 and chipped that in which kind of kick started a load of birdies. It was nice to get some momentum because it wasn't really great up to that.

Overall really pleased and playing solid golf, and looking forward to the match now.

Q. It's one of those challenges, isn't it, obviously, you had probably a tougher day yesterday and then you had to come out and make birdies to make the match play.

ARCHIE DAVIES: Yeah, I played solid yesterday. It's one of those, it's so scorable, it's easy to get impatient and force things, so I was pleased with that. I just stayed patient and just let it happen out there.

Q. Is this your first time here?

ARCHIE DAVIES: I played The Amateur last year. I played it a few years ago at Portmarnock, and what was the one, in Ireland. So it's my third one.

Last year I made it through at Nairn, it was great, and obviously a bit of a stronger field here, so it's nice to do it again.

Q. How did you get on at Nairn? Did you progress?

ARCHIE DAVIES: No, I lost in the round of 64. But, I've prepared a lot better this year. Last year, I got back from America and I had to quarantine for like ten days, so I missed the practice round, and then so I was on the first tee, like haven't played the course, which is crazy.

But no, it's nice to be a bit more prepared this year.

Q. As you say, it is a stronger field, record entries this year, as well, so you've done pretty well to get through 288 to get to 64 and ties.

ARCHIE DAVIES: Yeah, I felt like I've just been really sharp coming from America this year. I've played lots of tournament golf this year. I've felt good.

Q. What's your college in the States?

ARCHIE DAVIES: East Tennessee State. I have three years there now. Looking to do one more, maybe two more, but no, it's a really good college.

Q. How difficult is it coming from that, I'm assuming high ball flight, ball landing fairly softly, coming back to this type of golf?

ARCHIE DAVIES: Weirdly from regionals and nationals, it felt a bit easier this week. Like the course everything and, weirdly -- I'm sure to some people it feels hard but it felt quite easy because our nationals was such a grind and such a difficult golf course.

But no, you just adapt. This week I was playing lots of links courses and trying to get a feel, mainly into the greens, playing front edge a lot and stuff.
