RBC CANADIAN OPEN

June 9, 2022

Wyndham Clark

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

St. George's Golf & Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Wyndham, bogey-free 63, if we can get some comments on an excellent round.

WYNDHAM CLARK: Yeah, it's nice to see some putts go in. I haven't shot a low one in a while. I've had a lot of couple under par, 3, 4-under pars in my last few events, but really felt like I left a lot of shots out there.

This round I maximized pretty much everything out there. Overall, I'm really pleased with how I played today.

Q. Number one right now in strokes gained putting. Is that one of the keys to the round today?

WYNDHAM CLARK: Yeah, all around I hit it great. I drove it pretty good off the tee. I did miss some fairways, but when I missed it, it wasn't that bad. I hit a lot of great iron shots in there, and yeah I made a good amount of putts from 10 to 20 feet, and I didn't really miss much inside of 10 feet either.

Putter felt good. My caddie and I, we felt really confident in our reads, and the balls went in today.

Q. Talk a little bit about the conditions as well and also St. George's.

WYNDHAM CLARK: It's definitely playing long. I mean, I don't know how long this golf course is, but it's not running out that much because of how soft it is, with all the rain they've gotten. But that also makes it tough and really important to hit fairways because the rough is so thick that a lot of times it could be 160 to the hole and you can't even get all the way to the green because the rough is so thick. So it definitely makes it important to hit the fairways.

And then just the slope of the greens out here, you've really got to be smart when you do get in trouble or out of position, or even when you're in position, you just want to hit it to where you're below the hole and you don't have these big breaking, sliding putts.

Q. Talk a little about the state of your game coming into this week and how excited you are to start with such a great round.

WYNDHAM CLARK: Yeah, obviously everyone, when they're watching tournaments, they see the guys that are winning and are at the top. I've made a lot of cuts this year and had a lot of really solid rounds. I just haven't put them together. I've had a lot of 1-under, 2-under rounds where I've hit a lot of greens and a lot of good play. I just haven't put it together.

So I've been trending in the right direction, and today it all kind of came together. I'm really hoping that we keep going this week with that and leading into next week at the U.S. Open and for the rest of the summer. My game feels good.

Q. Was the first round last week one of those rounds where you felt like you played really well? I was looking at your best rounds of the season in terms of strokes gained total, approach to green, and tee to green, last week was your best all year.

WYNDHAM CLARK: Last week at Jack's place, it's a very tough golf course, and I shot 4-under. I was one off the lead. Left a couple shots out there, but really felt confident in how I played.

Friday my nerves and some anxiousness out there kind of affected how I played, and I was really frustrated because my game was there last week. I really felt like I could have turned that into a really great week, and I just didn't fully have it on the weekend. I played great Saturday and Sunday and shot like even-par both days.

So it was just nice to come out here, felt similar play, but I just had the putts fall. That's all I felt I've needed all year was just a little jump start like this where I see some putts and it's okay, I'm doing the right things, and I'm finally getting rewarded for all the hard work.
