BANK OF HOPE LPGA MATCH-PLAY

May 28, 2022

Madelene Sagstrom

Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Shadow Creek

Quick Quotes

Q. Here with Madelene Sagstrom after her round of 16 victory over Emma Talley. You won 4&2. I see you had a lot of pars today, couple of birdies. Tell me, are the pars just as important as the birdies during a match play event like this?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: Absolutely. It's a tough golf course. Some of the pin placements have been hard to get to. Some good lag putting and some solid pars. I didn't make too many mistakes, and I think that's kind of what you have to do when the golf course is tough and when you're trying to just slowly but surely build momentum. Was kind of trying, letting her make the mistakes first and hopefully not me.

Made a couple birdies, got the ball rolling on the first one and stuff like that, but it's solid. Par is good out here.

Q. Would you did you say you were playing a little more conservatively today?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I was trying not to. You're still trying to hit good shots, hit close to the pins. It's just tough. The greens are firm and the pins were kind of tucked on some of those and you can't being aggressive because you can't stop the ball.

I was trying to play as aggressive as I could and I thought I did, and just can't get close to the pins.

Q. Big turnaround from how you played here last year. What do you think the difference has been this year?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I think overall my game is trending in a good direction. I'm playing much more solid. I was talking to my caddie, Shane, I was like I've never really (indiscernible) match play, so looks like I'm learning something.

But I think it's just the more consistent I play the better I play whatever kind of tournament it is. I been really playing solid lately and I'm playing really consistent.

Q. Then just real quick, overall what's it like being out there with the decision to not have fans out here, not sell tickets to this event?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I mean, it's like playing during COVID again. No, it's not -- I mean, we kind of got used to it during COVID so it's nothing different. You hear cheers here and there and hopefully see a few more people this afternoon.

Q. Yeah. Is it tough to hit a good shot and hear absolutely nothing?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: No. No, when we're home practicing all the time it's just ourselves, so it's not any different really.

Q. You said you feel like you aren't very good at match play. Why is that? What's hard about match play for you maybe?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I don't know. I think that I've always seen myself as a good stroke -- like a better stroke play player, but I think that I'm getting better at being aggressive when I have to be aggressive. I'm getting better at hitting the putts harder when I have to hit them harder.

And just like anything can happen in match play and I'm getting use to that. Getting used to being a bit more consistent, keeping the ball more in play, because I think sometimes when I hit it off line I put too much pressure on myself in match play and stuff like that.

Just the more consistent I play the better I get at match play I guess.

Q. I know you have a little time before your next match. How are you preparing for another round of golf today after a sort of the long round? This is the earliest you've been off this week, but still more golf ahead of you.

MADELENE SAGSTROM: Going to go of have some lunch, hopefully, whenever that opens, put my compression socks on and just try and get some rest. Just put my legs up and get as much recovery as I can.

Q. And mentally what will you be doing?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I might go call my boyfriend actually. I haven't talked to him in a couple days, so I'm going to go do that.
