PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

May 19, 2022

Abraham Ancer

Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA

Southern Hills Country Club

Flash Quotes

.

JOHN DEVER: Good afternoon, and welcome back to the 2022 PGA Championship here at Southern Hills. We're with Abraham Ancer, who just began his championship with a 3-under par 67. Abraham, that's kind of like the strong start that you put forth some strong play last year and kind of carried it in another PGA Championship round; well played.

ABRAHAM ANCER: Thank you. Yeah, definitely a solid round. I was just always pretty much in the right spot of the fairways it felt like, except the first two holes that I missed the fairways. Other than that felt like I hit it really good off the tee and some good iron play, as well.

Whenever I missed the green I was in a bunker and it wasn't too bad of a spot. I only got one up-and-down. Really wanted to make those putts for par on the other ones.

But it's all good; I'm happy with my score and the way I played today.

Q. Is there any extra value in the way you ended? You bogeyed I believe 16, but you come back and answer right away with a birdie. Is there extra value in that for a player as they go from round 1 to round 2?

ABRAHAM ANCER: Yeah, definitely lunch tastes a lot better when you come in with a birdie. I felt like I played really, really well for maybe like a 5-under round, but I'm never going to be asking too much after that.

I know this is a tough golf course and it can go the other way quickly.

Happy the way I played. Happy I made birdie on 17 and nice par there on 18. Wanted to make that one for -- that would have been a plus making birdie on 18 for sure.

Q. With your local knowledge here of Oklahoma, what do you think the wind is going to be doing these days, and what should people expect?

ABRAHAM ANCER: Local knowledge like in the state?

Q. Local knowledge --

ABRAHAM ANCER: I've only played here once before and it was before the redo.

Q. You know about the wind.

ABRAHAM ANCER: I know about the wind. It can blow, it can be gusty, and definitely here with the tall trees it can be a little deceiving where it's coming from.

There's a couple times you feel it coming from one side and then you see the pin blowing the other way. You just have to stick to it and trust where the forecast says it is and just keep that ball low.

Hopefully the greens don't get too firm, that way we don't have to hit the ball that high. Yeah, like I said, really happy with how I managed things today.

Q. I just wanted to ask you about Oklahoma State fans; did you see a lot of Oklahoma fans out on the course today? And also just Coach Hybl and his team winning regionals, how big was that, and do you expect the support of them this week?

ABRAHAM ANCER: Yeah, absolutely. There was about on average eight to ten boomers yelling at me every single hole. It's nice to feel the support. You see a lot of Crimson out there. I talked to Coach Hybl this morning. I saw Chris Gotterup was out there, part of the team is here watching. It's a really neat feeling, the support, and it's nice to see them boys win yesterday. It was awesome.
