MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 8, 2022

J.J. Spaun

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. J.J., you turned in one of the low rounds today. How would you kind of characterize how you played?

J.J. SPAUN: I played obviously very good. I tried my best to stay patient out there, even on the par-5s. I laid up to every single par-5 and just took what the course gave me. My caddie and I, Mark, we did a great job of just staying patient. When birdies came along, great. If we were in trouble, just tried our best to make pars.

Q. Without obviously a lot of times around this place, how did you kind of manage the wind, the swirls, the gusts? Maybe not having all the rounds that some of the other guys have had around here.

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, maybe that's a good thing, like no scar tissue. Some of the guys that have played out here so many years probably have a memory of a gust or some wind direction that shouldn't happen. We were just playing the way we felt, and we knew the general direction was just a west/southwest all day.

Down in Amen Corner, it got kind of quirky with the wind. We just tried to play stress-free golf. That's all we did. Just keep the ball in front of us, try to keep it below the hole, and make a couple putts if we could and try to make pars a good score.

Q. How is it coming off a win last week? But how good was this round given how the conditions were and where we are?

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, I almost felt like in the zone that I was in on Sunday, just felt really calm, really confident. I felt like I was in really good control of my ball all day throughout the bag.

We just did good with the wind. We had a lot of good numbers out there, and we didn't have to fit anything crazy out there. It just seemed like we were golfing our ball and we did a good job of just trying to manage the course.

We knew it was going to be hard, and we knew anything around par or anything under par was going to be good. And I got off to a good start too to get to like 2-under through three was nice. So that kind of gives you like a little bit of a cushion to breathe out here.

Q. Is attitude kind of a big part of today? Just keeping a positive attitude.

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, yesterday was big as far as like getting that first round under my belt, kind of not knowing what to expect. I knew I've been playing good, and I knew that I could play well. But it's your first round at the Masters. It's the first time at the Masters. So I really didn't know what to expect.

We were like a two ball, so we were flying. Today was kind of nice being a two ball in the middle because we could just take our time, be as detailed as we needed to be without getting behind or getting too close to the guys and waiting in front of us.

Yeah, we just had a good time out there and just looked around and enjoyed where we were. We weren't planning to be here last week, so it's a great day and a great week so far to cap off an even better week last week.

Q. I talked to you at Bay Hill, and we talked about your confidence growing and getting so much better, then your win. How much is a lot of this kind of the flood gates opening to give you more confidence and feeling like now you truly do belong out here?

J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, and I think winning on the PGA TOUR and winning the week before the Masters, where everyone's trying to tune up, it was a great field and a tough golf course. And I knew I'd been playing well. It's just a matter of time.

I got my swing back to where it should be and started trusting that and not trying to change too much stuff. I just knew it was a matter of time of getting everything to click at the right time. It's been like that for the last few months, like everything was pretty close to clicking, like maybe three out of the four cylinders were clicking.

And last week, especially Sunday, all four were clicking. It almost seemed like today all four were clicking too. I think that's why I was able to put together a nice round.
