MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 7, 2022

Patrick Cantlay

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. How would you characterize your round today, Patrick?

PATRICK CANTLAY: I thought I played really solid on a tricky day. It was difficult out there with the wind. It was up and down and kind of changing direction. I made a few mistakes, but all in all it was a good start.

Q. What was the trickiest part about the wind today?

PATRICK CANTLAY: I think it just changed directions a little bit. It didn't do a 180 or anything, but it was blowing out of maybe a 45-degree window and not necessarily just one consistent direction, and then it was up and down. So if you did a good job and waited for your wind or waited for a consistent wind, you could predict it a little better, but it was difficult.

Q. The fact that you learned this course over the last few years, did that help in some of the situations maybe knowing when to wait, when not to wait?

PATRICK CANTLAY: I think experience definitely helps around here, and you hear the guys say that all the time. I'm just trying to still learn. I mean, a lot of the greens out there are new, obviously, and some of the tee boxes are new, so just the more you can get accustomed out here, the better off you'll be.

Q. You grind very well. Tomorrow is going to be -- it's supposed to be a tough day. Wind, cold. How do you mentally prepare for that and go out and execute your game plan?

PATRICK CANTLAY: I think you just prepare yourself before you even go out. You know it's going to play difficult, and so you have to be a little friendlier on yourself, and you can't take as much risk. Especially on a golf course like this where usually if the weather is perfect and everything, you can have risk-reward holes, but a lot of times when it's blowing 20 miles an hour or more out here, it's just survival.

Q. On 15 was that mostly wind, or is there design changes on the hole where it doesn't maybe go as far on the speed slot or something like that?

PATRICK CANTLAY: Well, the design change would be you can't get it there. It's too far.

Q. On a normal day?

PATRICK CANTLAY: Maybe on a downwind day you could get it there, but not into the wind like it was today.

Q. On a regular, calm day you would say 50/50 to go or less than that?

PATRICK CANTLAY: I don't think I've played it enough times to even know.

Q. But it's discernibly longer?

PATRICK CANTLAY: It's definitely a lot longer.
