MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 7, 2022

Sungjae Im

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Butler Cabin

Q. I am joined by Sungjae Im and his manager, Danny Oh, who also serves as our translator today. 4-under on the first nine. 1-under on the second nine. 67.

What was the key to getting off to such a hot start today?

SUNGJAE IM: I think the key to the good round today was just getting off to a hot start. I birdied the first three holes, and that's what got me on to a good rhythm.

Q. If this lead holds up, Sungjae, you would be the first player from South Korea to ever lead any round in the Masters. If that holds up, what would that accomplishment mean to you?

SUNGJAE IM: I'll be honest, I'm excited and happy and excited about the hot start, but I want to be humble, and I still have three days left to play, so I just want to stay composed and hopefully continue this.

Q. I wonder how much inspiration, Sungjae, you glean from your father's shot in the Par-3 Contest on Wednesday.

SUNGJAE IM: It was certainly a memorable one. We had Scottie Scheffler, Sam Burns, and Billy Horschel behind us, and when my dad was setting up to hit it, they were all kind of laughing and smiling. That's what got me too, but once he hit the ball, the ball flight was so good. He hit a great shot. Overall, it was a great memory and experience.

Q. If you continue to play well, Dad is going to have to hit a shot every year you come back to Augusta. Sungjae, thanks. Good luck tomorrow. Let's send it back out to the action at 17.
