MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 7, 2022

Shane Lowry

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. A lot of good stuff today. One or two tough moments. How do you assess a round of 1-over?

SHANE LOWRY: I think I'm a bit disappointed, to be honest. Considering how I drove the golf ball today, that was not a great score.

Missed a fair one on the first, and then pretty much I was down the middle of every fairway and a long way down there, and I put myself in position to have a good score, and my approach play was pretty awful, to be honest.

Yeah, it is what it is. I've shot 1-over. I got myself back into the round around Amen Corner and then threw it away on 15. It is what it is. Look, I'm a bit disappointed, but I'll pick myself up. I'll go and hit a few wedges now and figure out what I'm doing and, yeah, get out tomorrow.

Q. When was it about your game that -- just your approach play?

SHANE LOWRY: I didn't hit any -- I missed four greens with wedges. One with an 8-iron. One with a 7-iron. I was in position to hit one on every hole apart from the first. I only shot one over, so it was disappointing.

I holed out well. My approach play has been my strength all year and over the last two years. It's kind of let me down today, but, yeah, it's only one day. I know it's the first round of the Masters. Not the ideal time for it to happen.

Tom is going a bit and having a great round. Other than that, scoring is not overly ridiculous. It's quite tough, and it's going to be very tough tomorrow, so 1-over is not the worst score.

Q. Conditions are -- the wind is swirling.

SHANE LOWRY: It's hard. I don't think people realize how hard it is out there. Yeah, the wind is swirling.

Going into 15, 1-under after getting it back and making the eagle on 13 and birdieing 14, I thought you kind of have the golf course and you are past all the hard stuff. 16, 17, 18 were playing not that hard today. Whatever. 15 was just a bit of a disaster, to be honest.

Q. Did you get the strike on --

SHANE LOWRY: It was the wrong club, for a start, and a bad shot. It was the ball's fault. Not my fault.

Q. (Off microphone)

SHANE LOWRY: I forgot about that. Yeah, I have never seen anything like it. It pitched in the hole and didn't make a mark. There wasn't one mark in the hole. It was a good shot. Lucky to make par. It pitched in the hole. It literally slammed into the hole. 4-iron from whatever it was. 220-something. It didn't leave one -- normally the hole is destroyed after that. Didn't leave one mark in the hole, so it must have just in, hit the metal and bounced back out. Yeah, that was a good iron shot. (Laughing). My long iron play is okay. My short irons are not great.

Q. (Off microphone)

SHANE LOWRY: Chip on 13 was nice. Coming back into it. I played good. It's not easy out there. Maybe I was trying to be maybe a bit precise on my approach shots. This course can do that to you. It's tricky as well, so, yeah, 13 got me going. Birdie 14 was great.

My tail was up going down 15 and hit a lovely drive and led it up to -- it was a bit of not a great number, but 95 and it was into a strong wind. Even if I had a good shot with that club, I think it would have spun in the water. It was one of those where I should have been hitting -- worst case it should have been where my fifth shot ended up just over the back. Look, you kind of live and learn.

Q. Not too much damage.

SHANE LOWRY: No, just disappointing to double the par five. You know me, lads. I want it so bad.
