MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 6, 2022

Lucas Herbert

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. Lucas, preparation, how's it been this week? It's now Wednesday. You just played the Par 3. What's prep been like this week?

LUCAS HERBERT: It's been good. It's been a little interrupted obviously with the weather, it hasn't been ideal, but it's been a lot of fun.

I've got a lot of people with me this week that have come to support, and it's very cool to have them see the property for the first time. Like some guys that have been there with me since I was very, very young. So to have them kind of be here for the first experience is pretty cool.

Q. Tell me about that drive down Magnolia Lane this week, what was it like?

LUCAS HERBERT: It's pretty special. All of us, obviously, experienced it at different stages, but I think pretty much every day even if -- like we don't need to go down Magnolia Lane. You can kind of go straight right to where we need to go, but you always find an excuse to go down there, right?

Q. You sure do. You are a rookie here. You have won on the U.S. tour, but do you have to get more games under your belt to understand this golf course or you're all ready to go, you know it pretty much because you've watched it for years?

LUCAS HERBERT: I think it's always going to be one of those places where the more you've played it, the more you've seen different wind, different pin positions, all that kind of stuff, you're going to know it a lot better.

I feel like I've done some pretty good prep. I feel like I'm in a spot to be able to go out there and play well this week.

If my driver and 3-wood behaves like I want it to, I don't see any reason why I can't be up there contending on Sunday.

Q. Knowing your game, this golf course suits your game, doesn't it?

LUCAS HERBERT: In some ways it does; in some ways it doesn't. I think there's a lot of things that help the parts of my game it maybe doesn't suit. I've never really been a strong sort of short-iron player.

I feel like the grass here, it's almost like the ball goes straight out of this grass for some reason, weirdly, but that's definitely helped me out.

I think we were standing there on 12 the other day, and obviously I'm someone who always plays well when it gets windy, right? I'm almost talking about it's going to be better the way I fly my irons quite a lot lower and a lot less spin; it's not going to get affected by the wind as much.

I think that's going to be a big help through sort of Amen Corner where you've got tricky wind directions. You'd almost prefer it to be blowing 15 miles an hour because you know where it's coming from. When it's blowing a gust here and there you almost don't know what direction it is.

Those things suit me. The par-5s obviously set up perfectly for me to send driver down there and give myself a some sort of line into the green.

So, yeah, it's been an interesting sort of week to tray to figure out how to prepare.

Q. You have played well this year. How's the game right now? It's hard sometimes to peak at the right times. What's the game like now?

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, look, everything except driver and 3-wood I feel really, really confident with. I'm hitting some good drives and I'm hitting some average drives, so it's a bit tricky to commit and trust them at the moment, but if I can sort of come out tomorrow and have a good range session before the round and hit a few good drivers, I think we could be in for a good day.

Q. Last one: The Par 3, how much fun was that?

LUCAS HERBERT: It was a lot of fun. Obviously Tommy and Jon had their kids out there running around causing havoc, but it was just so much fun. It was just awesome.

It's just been an awesome week too with the spectators with -- well, the patrons to not have everyone on their phones because. Obviously there's no phones allowed out here. Everyone is just so present and watching what's going on.

You don't sort of have people just getting in the wrong spot and not even realizing there's people hitting shots because they're just here to watch golf. That's something really awesome that you don't experience every week.
