Q. Congratulations, a round of 3-under. Early days, but nevertheless you're top of the leaderboard. Tell me about your round out there.

SOPHIE WITT: Yeah, I hit very much bad shots over there. I hit the fairways, and to be honest, when I hit the green, I made birdie. The most times I didn't hit the fairway or the green, and then I pitch and putt.

Yeah, I don't know, it was a little bit lucky today because I got good and made bad shots, so yes.

Q. It's always good to be lucky out there. Did you feel when you were practicing on this course that you could score low when the tournament would get under way?

SOPHIE WITT: Probably when I hit good shots, you can play a good round here because the wind is tough and the fairways are wide open. Yeah, I think when you hit the good drive and a good iron to the green, it's possible to score good.

Q. Obviously, this is very, very early in your career, just your second tournament. What were your expectations coming into this week?

SOPHIE WITT: To be honest, I told my mom this morning, hopefully I don't play a 90 (laughter) because the last three days I hit so many thin shots. Normally I have one shot you can hit on the fairway to go on the green, and I don't know, I can hit everywhere, and I can hit it thin, fat, right, left.

I think now I want to make the cut. Yeah, it's my rookie season. Have fun, enjoy it. I think I can learn so much from the good players in the field here and from my playing partners. Yeah, I think it's pure joy here.

Q. Today must have given you so much confidence and self belief that come competition day, you can perform.

SOPHIE WITT: Yes, I think I'm a player, when I have a competition, so yeah. To be honest, I'm a competition player and not a player on the range. So I struggle on the range and I struggle on the course, but I can score good.

I don't know what's happened outside, but the course was on my side today, and the greens were on my side too, yes.
