QATAR TOTAL ENERGIES OPEN

February 20, 2022

Garbine Muguruza

Doha, Qatar

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Give us your thoughts on arriving in Doha and what you're looking forward to this week.

GARBINE MUGURUZA: Well, so far good. I mean, I have been training, I have been getting ready. It's a tournament that I have played so many years. I know, I think, how it is and how to prepare.

Good, just waiting for an opponent, and hopefully I can start tomorrow.

THE MODERATOR: What are your thoughts so far on the conditions?

GARBINE MUGURUZA: Conditions are kind of windy here always. You know, it's always hot during the day and cold at night. Yeah, pretty much Middle East weather (smiling).

THE MODERATOR: Anything you're looking forward to in the city now that we have a little bit less restrictions in the area?

GARBINE MUGURUZA: Well, there has been a lot of construction lately here in Doha, so there was a couple of museums that seems interesting, and obviously like gigantic mall they did (smiling).

Yeah, so far I don't have plans to do much besides just concentrated and resting for the tournament.

THE MODERATOR: Questions?

Q. You lost to Petra twice in the finals here. She kind of denied you the title. What makes you come back to Doha? Do you think you have played here in Doha so many times that you have an advantage over the rest of the field here in Doha?

GARBINE MUGURUZA: Well, I mean, I keep coming because there is a big tournament. It's important in our calendar. I think, like you said, I have played well in the past. I have been very, very, very close to getting the title twice.

But, I mean, playing finals, it's always a very good sign, so I feel like I know how to play here. Hopefully I can bring all of these matches and experiences into this year's tournament.

Q. Last week Roberto had won the tournament, a Spaniard. Do you think this week it will be the turn of a Spanish player?

GARBINE MUGURUZA: Yeah, I saw that he won the title for a second time. I think he won it already in the past. So, yeah, that was a great final. I saw actually semifinals and final.

Yeah, hopefully another Spaniard can get the title, so we conquer Qatar 2022 (smiling).
