AUSTRALIAN OPEN

January 24, 2022

Matteo Berrettini

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Press Conference

M. BERRETTINI/P. Carreno Busta

7-5, 7-6, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Another impressive performance. Now you have made history, because you're the first Italian to have reached the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slams. How do you feel about that?

MATTEO BERRETTINI: Thank you. Yeah, it was a really solid performance. I think I was serving well, playing good. Yeah, he wasn't reading my serve at all, so it gave me the freedom like to feel more calm when I had to return, even though I had a lot of chances.

It makes me feel good. I didn't know about this. You guys told me after my match, so makes me feel really good. It means that I'm doing great stuff, which I never believed I could do when I was younger. I always remember being here, playing the juniors and thinking maybe I'm gonna play quallies. I don't know.

So it's a good feeling (smiling).

THE MODERATOR: Questions?

Q. You have Monfils next who is very experienced. He's a lot older than you, 35. Do you think that that will make him more difficult to play against with that experience?

MATTEO BERRETTINI: I mean, for sure he's an experienced player, and he's been in these kind of situations, these matches in slams so many times, but I also think that I did the same. Obviously he has way more matches and way more experience. He's 10 years older, but in a way, he's really young because his body, it's great. Like he's moving really well, and he's a tricky player.

I have good memories when I played him last time in a quarterfinals in a slam, so hopefully it's gonna be a good one too.

Q. Obviously the Netflix cameras have been following you around. How do you find that? Is it annoying? Is it exciting?

MATTEO BERRETTINI: They're there, so I cannot say they are annoying (smiling). But when they're gonna leave, I'm gonna say...

No. I think it's a cool format. I think it's a cool thing, something that was never showed like so far in tennis and behind the scenes in that way. They are respectful. They follow us. Obviously they want to know what's going on, and I think it's gonna be a really good thing for tennis.

Obviously for me and Ajla it's different because we are a couple on the tour and it's different, but I think there are a lot of plus for this thing, yeah.
