GAINBRIDGE LPGA AT BOCA RIO

January 28, 2022

Su Oh

Boca Raton, Florida, USA

Boca Rio Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Su Oh, a recent champion on the WPGA of Australia.

SU OH: Yep.

Q. Of Australia. Start here. You had five birdies on the scorecard today.

SU OH: Yep.

Q. At Nos. 1 and 8 on the front, and 11, 12, and 13 on the back. Any of those help you get going?

SU OH: Probably the one on 11. The front nine wasn't -- it was just so cold, and then wind actually picked up and it was so long actually the 11th hole. I hit like smash driver then smash 5-wood to like ten feet and that really got me going.

I haven't been hitting the ball that great, but there were shots that I hit pretty good. Those three were nice. It was a bit tricky, like couldn't really tell exactly where the wind was. It was a lot of like a little bit off the -- like a little bit down, a little bit into.

I guess some holes are really sheltered. But, yeah, got a couple of them wrong. It was pretty solid out there.

Q. Did you play here in 2020?

SU OH: No, first time.

Q. Oh, first time?

SU OH: Uh-huh.

Q. What is your take of the course, the challenges?

SU OH: It's pretty long right now and it's kind of muddy, which I'm not a fan of. I got a few mud balls. I'm not sure why we played it down today. Playing with USGA rules maybe.

Yeah, it's nice. Very grainy. Just getting a bit used to it.

Q. How does it differ from Australian golf, what you just came from?

SU OH: Well, it's been summer so it's been long. I've been hitting it longer. Still grainy with where I won, but just hasn't been as wet and cold, so kind of miss it. (Laughter.)

I think the weekend looks freezing, so should be interesting.

Q. Yeah, looks cold.

SU OH: Yeah, this is not the reason I came to Florida. Like I thought -- I've never been in Florida this time of the year. I just thought it was like nice, not like boiling.

It's not.

Q. Well, and Fort Myers next week it'll be in the low 80s.

SU OH: It'll be good.

Q. But I think it's going to be cold on the weekend there, too.

SU OH: Oh. What is going on?

Q. Yeah, I know.

SU OH: Karrie was like, Yeah, it's been really hot this December. I'm like, It has?

Q. Yeah, you just came at the wrong time.

SU OH: Yeah, apparently.

Q. Speaking of Karrie, you recently won in Australia the Australian Women's PGA, which was, what, the first year they had it?

SU OH: Yep.

Q. As Karrie talked about earlier this week, they hope to make it an annual women's standalone event. How special was it to win the inaugural Karrie Cup?

SU OH: Yeah, I -- once Karrie's name was on it I was like, I really want to be first person to win it. That's pretty cool, because I'll always be the first person to have won it.

Yeah, no, it was great. Then I got paired with her this week and then I was like, Did you pull some strings to play with me? She didn't, but, yeah it was really nice playing with her. Yeah, it was good.

Q. What were the conversations like, if there is anything you don't mind sharing of anything you guys talked about? You were a scholarship series winner of hers.

SU OH: Yeah, nothing special. Just kind of catching up a little bit. First time I've seen her. I didn't get to see her last year.

Yeah, no, nothing like crazy. Just she was just very happy that I won and it's just always nice to see her.

She's hitting it so good at the moment. Not good for her standard, but she's still ripping it. I love the way she hits her irons. It's probably one of my favorites. Like so good, so high. Yeah, it's nice.

Especially when it's so muddy as well. She's just like clips it perfect and it goes very high. Very envious of her ball flight.

Q. Obviously on the LPGA we talk so much about Annika and her greatness. Can you put into perspective what Karrie, the equivalent of what Karrie Webb means to golf in Australia?

SU OH: I think she just gives back like so much. She really gives back to the people that are up and coming. There is not many people who would bring two girls, even when she was still like playing full time like to the U.S. Open when she's probably like super stressed as well.

Just to give the younger generation a chance at what she thinks is the pinnacle of golf. So it's a gift for us to like experience that and be like a motivation for us when we turn pro, and hopefully make it out here.

Yeah, I don't really know anybody else that's doing what she's doing. Like we all really appreciate it. It just kind of keeps the connection. I think that's what so good about right now. Like I know a lot of the younger girls coming up -- not that I'm old -- but the 19, 18 year olds, and, yeah she's still in it and she knows everybody. Still watches, even the junior stuff.

So probably knows more girls than I did. Yeah, it's great.

Q. And last one I have for you: Any New Year's resolutions?

SU OH: Not really big on New Year's resolutions kind of thing. Hopefully just stay healthy and have the best year out here. Nothing dramatically different to all the other years. I had a good finish to the end of the season, so hopefully just get off to a good start and have a great year.

Q. Anything maybe off the course, like a goal or something that you would like to accomplish this year that could be a New Year's resolution, I guess?

SU OH: Not particularly. No, not really.

Q. Is it a new country or something like that?

SU OH: I would like to go on a holiday, but it just kind of depends. In that Europe stretch because it's so cold at home I probably won't go back to Melbourne. But, yeah, I mean, we'll see. It's a long year, yeah.
