Emirates Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. That was pretty steady stuff, wasn't it?

LEE WESTWOOD: Yeah, it was and I didn't play quite as well as yesterday. Over the first few days probably left a few out there but I played patient. Saw the greens on Tuesday and Wednesday, and they are very firm, and it didn't used to be a worry short-siding yourself around here. You could be really aggressive.

But now it's tricky to get up-and-down in some spots. Treat it with a lot of respect and played some patient stuff, and a couple of 69s, good, solid stuff.

Q. The way the course has changed, so many people in the field been here so many times; that patience in the mindset is key, isn't it.

LEE WESTWOOD: Yeah, it's quite confusing on the greens. I had like a Monty putt, from when he hit driver on the green, I looked at it and for eagle today, and it looked left edge and it moved a ball right-to-left. The greens have just changed. Nothing's really stayed the same. So it's a case of learning the greens again all together.

Q. From your point of view, what's your assessment of the season so far in a sense? I know we are only into the second event but what's the feeling about the state of your game.

LEE WESTWOOD: Season so far is short. I've only played six rounds, but so far, so good.

Yeah, I've started off steady. Feel like my game is in the right place. I didn't play much after The Ryder Cup, and I feel fresh. Obviously in December, I had COVID which has knocked me back quite a lot and didn't get a lot done with my fitness or anything. I'm a bit behind the 8-ball starting the season but considering that, I'm happy with where it is.

Q. Was it difficult to get over COVID?

LEE WESTWOOD: Yeah, I'm asthmatic, as well. Felt like the flu and chest infection, which I'm not very often ill and I hate being ill and takes a lot to stop me but I didn't really get off the couch for two weeks in December. Yeah, it surprised me how bad I was with it.

Q. Middle East I'm sure doing the trick.

LEE WESTWOOD: Yes, very much. So although last week we got sandblasted on the Friday, but other than that, it's ideal playing conditions.
