ADELAIDE INTERNATIONAL

January 3, 2022

Ajla Tomljanovic

Adelaide, South Australia, Australia

Press Conference

A. TOMLJANOVIC/H. Watson

6-4, 7-6

THE MODERATOR: First match of the year, a solid two-set win. Must be happy with your form, how you played today.

AJLA TOMLJANOVIC: Yeah, I mean, first matches are always tough. I don't know why. I just feel a little bit of extra pressure just getting that first win.

I think it was definitely a little bit nervy from my side. I've had some really good practices here, so I did expect myself to play well. But maybe I would have liked to play a little better.

I'm just happy I got the win in the match because by the end we both were playing some pretty good tennis.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Looking towards the year as a whole, you probably had your best season last season in terms of the Grand Slams. What are you aiming for overall in 2022?

AJLA TOMLJANOVIC: I mean, yeah, I don't like putting this, like, big goal where if I fail, if I don't reach it, it's like a big failure. I think it's hard to put big goals in slams when I'm not seeded. I could face a really tough opponent from the first round.

Going far in slams is the biggest objective for me going into this year because that's where I want to do my best. I think we all want to peak at those four slams.

Yeah, that's just my biggest goal, going as deep as I can in those four tournaments.

Q. Looking towards your next opponent, it's either going to be Sofia Kenin or Rossetti of Italy. What are you expecting with that matchup? We've seen Sofia play very well in Australia in the past.

AJLA TOMLJANOVIC: Yeah, I didn't see the Italian girl play much so I don't know really what to expect there.

I know Sonia has had great success over the last few years, but she has had a bit of a break since Wimbledon so I'm curious to see how she comes out. I'm sure she's had a good off-season so she should be ready to go.

I'm curious to see how that match plays out given that I haven't seen the other girl play yet and what form Sonia is coming in with.
