SENTRY TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

January 7, 2022

Jon Rahm

Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii, USA

Plantation Course at Kapalua

Quick Quotes

Q. Clean card today. Assess your round and what went well today.

JON RAHM: Pretty much everything. Can't say much. It was really good tee to green. If there's anything to put an asterisk on it's maybe putting.

More than anything the speed, right? I feel like the greens were a little bit slower today. Me and Patrick talked about it a little bit. It could have just been us, but it felt like they were a little bit slower and I just felt like I left a lot of putts out there on line that with the right speed might have had a chance of going in. But either way, still a solid round of golf.

Q. You mentioned yesterday about holes 1 through 4. It took you the first four holes to kind of getting going again on 5. Still any rhyme or reason to anything --

JON RAHM: They're not the easiest holes. I don't understand why you guys are so obsessed. I checked the, actually the difficulty this morning. For whatever reason the No. 1 and 2 are ranked third most difficult on the course. So it's not easy.

And then 3 and 4 are not the easiest either. I mean, I know we make a lot of birdies and you can hit good shots and I certainly hit the shots today. I just didn't happen to make the putts.

But once you get to 5, 5, 6, 7, 8 with the right shot, 9, 10, 12, they're all birdie holes. They're all holes where you're going to have a short iron in. You're going to have a chance to make birdie.

So I think if you play those first four holes even par like I have and you make good swings and hit quality shots, it's not the end of the world. You can keep it up.

Q. Do you see a lot of other players struggling on those holes too just in general?

JON RAHM: Yeah. Yeah. I don't think I've ever played with anybody or it's not very often where you have somebody that's 2- or 3-under through 4, right?

If you're 1-under, I feel like you're already stealing one. You get to the par-5, you have a chance to go 2-under, and then you have a couple birdie holes, like I said.

But like I said, today I definitely had the putts. I had makeable putts on 1, 2 and 4 and I had good putts and they just didn't go in.

Q. What's it going to take for the weekend? The putting and getting that speed right?

JON RAHM: And I wasn't that too far off. Again, I'm nitpicking, right, I had so many chances out there, I had so many putts for birdie that it looks like you're missing a lot, but the make percentage is not that high. I can also say my lag putting today was excellent. I had a couple long putts out there on 6, 15 with slopes in the way, that one on 18 as well, where you can easily hit it to a distance where you can be fighting for the 2-putt and I hit them all to tap-in. So pluses and minuses, but it's still really, really good golf.
