2021 MLS CUP: PORTLAND VS NEW YORK CITY

December 11, 2021

Diego Chará

Portland Timbers

Postgame Press Conference

New York City 1, Portland 1

4-2 Penalties

Q. Walk us through the emotions on the field and going into extra time.

DIEGO CHARÃ: I think when we scored the goal, we tied the game, the energy was on a high level. I think we started putting everything we have on the field, and in the end in PKs is who made better decision and who is better.

Q. It was a very physical game at times. It was a very hard-fought game throughout. Can you just give us sort of your reaction and your thoughts on how the team played today?

DIEGO CHARÃ: I think in the first half was a little bit difficult because New York tried to control the ball, control the game. They find a way to score on us, and it was more difficult for us.

In the second half, we find a way to tie the game. I think after that, was different for us, getting confidence, playing with the ball, and the extra time, we created a lot of opportunities. But at the end in the PK, it was a different story.

Q. I know the emotions are raw, and they are going to linger for quite a while. As much as you're able to, and I appreciate you being willing to take the time with the press today, what's the reflection on the 2021 season for Portland? What do you look back upon for this year, and kind of what will stick out the most about this club and all you did accomplish, mindful, of course, of the heartbreak of today.

DIEGO CHARÃ: I think we need to learn on this opportunity in this game, because it's hard to be in the finals, you know, playing a lot of games in the regular season, playoff. And I think we need to take the best part of this and bring for next year, and at the same time we know we played really well. It was a very good season for the team. I think it was enough to get the trophy.

But now, recovery, try to be mentally strong, and start thinking about the next season.

Q. I saw you talk to Valeri after the penalty kick, what did you say to him and your teammates while you guys are processing this?

DIEGO CHARÃ: I say, "Keep it up," because it's not easy to be in that moment in that position because Valeri and Mora wants to do the best for the team. Unfortunately it doesn't happen today, and it's just a game. It feels sad because Mora had a very good season, and Diego wants to help the team, but unfortunately today, it doesn't happen.

Q. What can you say about Diego Valeri's legacy with the Timbers and being able to play with someone like that over the years?

DIEGO CHARÃ: Amazing. I think this guy helped to grow the culture and the team to a different level for the club, for the community. I think the experience to play with Valeri for eight years is amazing.
