LPGA Q-SERIES

December 2, 2021

Selena Costabile

Mobile, Alabama, USA

Magnolia Grove

Quick Quotes

Q. Good start today, 4-under. How are you feeling after this round on the Falls course?

SELENA COSTABILE: Good. Just tried to stay calm all day, just take the opportunities when they came. I made a few long putts on the back nine, so worked out.

Q. Was it four birdies in a row that I saw on the back nine?

SELENA COSTABILE: Yeah.

Q. How did you get your mindset into such a tear like that?

SELENA COSTABILE: Honestly just hitting the putts with good speed because they were longer putts. And, yeah, it worked out well.

Q. Obviously here from Stage II; have played on the Symetra Tour before. How comfortable are you at this year's Q-Series? How confident are you in your abilities?

SELENA COSTABILE: I'm just treating it like a regular tournament. For me, I try to think that every round is just a round of golf and I try my best at every round.

So I feel calm today, so hopefully I can continue my calm feelings throughout the week. Yeah, see how it goes.

Q. Having been -- I don't want to call you a veteran, but having been on the Symetra Tour and been around the game for a while, you've got to feel a little bit more comfortable in this situation than a lot of the other girls.

SELENA COSTABILE: To be honest, this was my first year on the Symetra, so I learned a lot about myself this year and how to prepare for events, what works for me, what doesn't work for me.

Yeah, so to be honest, I think I'm pretty new at it. That's okay.

Q. You have some pro starts under your belt.

SELENA COSTABILE: Yeah, exactly.

Q. It's early in the week, early in the two weeks, but how excited are you to have an opportunity at a card? Your fellow countrywomen have been doing great things for Canada.

SELENA COSTABILE: Definitely.

Q. How excited are you to add your name to that list?

SELENA COSTABILE: Definitely. It's awesome to see Brooke play so well on tour. Like just the success of Canada is awesome. So it's really inspiring, and I'm just trying to give myself the best opportunity I can.

Q. Off the golf course, I read some different things. You have some interesting hobbies.

SELENA COSTABILE: Yes.

Q. Still playing piano?

SELENA COSTABILE: I am still playing piano as much as I can. This year actually I didn't get to go back home for about four or five months so I didn't get to go and play piano.

But I just moved to Florida, so hopefully I'm going to buy myself a piano and keep my practice up.

Q. I know you said you took some time off. Have you learned anything new recently as far as pieces?

SELENA COSTABILE: No, nothing new. Just same old. Yeah, I'm not that --

Q. Sorry. What do you typically like to play?

SELENA COSTABILE: I love playing classical music. I group up playing classical music and I never really changed the genre of music I play. Just really calming and therapeutic. So, yeah, when I have an off season I'll try learn some new pieces.

Q. This is kind of a weird question. Do you ever hear that music in your head when you're on the golf course?

SELENA COSTABILE: I do meditate, so with my meditation music it is kind of like a calming classical music, so I still try to keep that kind of tune in my head.

But when I'm playing, no, I'm pretty focused on hitting my shots out here.

So, yeah.

Q. Fair enough.

SELENA COSTABILE: Yeah.

Q. Another thing you like to do is learn languages from what I understand.

SELENA COSTABILE: Uh-huh.

Q. How have you learned so far?

SELENA COSTABILE: So I speak English, French, and Russian fluently, Spanish as well, and then Japanese I'm intermediate. I still take classes and try to keep up during the year.

So four and then learning, still learning one, so five.

Q. Growing up in a bilingual household obviously helps that interest. What was it about -- Spanish makes sense, but what it about Japanese that you're like, I have to learn this? It's totally different than anything else you have in your repertoire.

SELENA COSTABILE: For sure. My mom put me in like a Saturday school class when I was young. Probably just another activity for me to keep busy with. I just really kept up with it. I really love the culture and it's such a challenge, so I love the challenge in trying to learn as much as I can about it. Yeah.

Q. Would you consider yourself more of an intellectual person? Those are typically intellectual people obviously.

SELENA COSTABILE: Yeah, I love to read. I'm definitely very studious, so off the course I would say that you'll find me reading or trying to study some language, yeah, for sure.

Q. Does that ever wear you out? I feel like with a lot of stress and strain on the golf course you brain would just be like, I just need to watch like Gilmore Girls and chill.

SELENA COSTABILE: Well, I do try to have a balance. I love my TV watching, not going to lie. But, no, reading and learning languages actually is very therapeutic and like calming I would say.

So, no, it doesn't really wear me out at all.

Q. Have you had any playing competitors -- I mean, on your time on the Symetra Tour -- I mean, this week in Q-Series you've only had one group, but have you been able to speak in their own tongue to them?

SELENA COSTABILE: Definitely.

Q. Were they kind of surprised?

SELENA COSTABILE: Definitely. It's been really cool. I been meeting a lot of Spanish people and that's been really nice to get to practice my Spanish out here.

And French, too. I met one Russian girl but not on this tour. I've yet to meet anyone that speaks Russian. And then Japanese there have been a few players, but I haven't been able to practice my Japanese yet.

Q. What are you looking forward to the rest of these seven rounds?

SELENA COSTABILE: Just kind of stick to my game plan, stay calm, and enjoy myself off the course.

Q. Last question: Crossing course, a little bit different than Falls course, but you got off to a hot start on the Falls course today. How are you feeling heading to Crossing tomorrow?

SELENA COSTABILE: Pretty good. I think -- honestly I think they're pretty similar golf courses, so I'm just kind of going to stick to do same game plan and try my best.
