Q. He played brilliantly well in the first set. Are you disappointed with the way it ended?

DANIEL EVANS: Yeah, it's far from ideal. Yeah, it was a difficult match. He played well. I didn't play so well. Got myself in a winning position in the second set and didn't take it. A bit indecisive really.

But the Czech Republic, always very tough in Davis Cup. They've always got a lot of passion, always play well. I knew they were going to be good. I think they had a good win the other day. Machac has been playing some good tennis.

He outplayed me in the first set. Second set, I can't say I should get through it, but I had my chances, yeah.

Q. Was the team surprised at all that Vesely wasn't playing? Were there murmurs on-site about that?

DANIEL EVANS: No, I mean, yeah, the thing with this format is you don't find out, do you, till an hour before. They can change the team up how they want. That's what they've done.

Yeah, when you've got four good singles players in the team, you just wait till the last possible minute. We didn't know. Hopefully it works in our favor that he's not playing.
