DAVIS CUP FINALS

November 26, 2021

Jannik Sinner

Team Italy

Press Conference

J. SINNER/J. Isner

6-2, 6-0

Italy - 2

USA - 0

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. How much did you enjoy that? How much does it mean to you to have made your debut for Italy in this competition?

JANNIK SINNER: Of course, it means a lot because I'm playing for our country, something different. You play not alone, you play for a group. You have a lot of responsibility.

I think today I really played well. I mean, I didn't miss many balls. I felt well on court today, which I think helped me a lot. Obviously returning that well against John is never easy. Today I've done that very, very well so I'm very happy.

Q. Last time you played John, it was a much tighter affair than today. What adjustments did you make from that match in Cincinnati?

JANNIK SINNER: I think I learned many things in that lost against him. I tried to do a little bit the same against Reilly in Vienna. Today I tried to do it quite similar, as well.

I don't know, just changing a little bit everything. Sometimes when you lose, you have to change. If you change, sometimes can go in the right way and sometimes can go even worse.

Today I think it went well.

Q. Can you try to put in words what it feels like playing that level in front of your home fans in a competition as important as this?

JANNIK SINNER: Happy, of course. I enjoyed every moment. Obviously pressure, which is normal, because you don't play for yourself. As I said before, you play for the team, you play for the country.

You have to be focus about what you have to do. Obviously if you play here, the crowd can help you. The team can help you. When you're down, you have the captain in the court, as well. Everyone can help you a little bit without making confusion.

Yeah, I think the emotions are, yeah, happy and obviously very more happy that we won today. This is obviously the best part of today. Every one of us, every five players, takes part of today's victories. We try to do tomorrow as a great day.

Q. You've had a lot of very big results over the last 12, 18 months. If you were to put it in context, where would this result, so strong and one-sided, be with some of the other results you've had?

JANNIK SINNER: It's a difficult question. I think I had a great year, first of all, last 18 months were incredible. I improved a lot. I am still improving, which is our main goal.

Obviously when you play something for the first time, it's very special already. If you win, obviously it's much, much better feeling. Of course it's going to be in the top list for sure.

Now I cannot say which one was the best one, for sure it's going to be in the top three or top five because it is something different. I always watched in front of the TV the guys who play for Italy. Now I'm here trying to make the best what I can do. Today it went very well.

For sure it's in the top five or in the top three. It is very special.

Q. Lorenzo was saying that before the match and during the match he felt pretty relaxed. What about you? Making a Davis Cup debut, it's a big deal. Were you relaxed or were there a few nerves?

JANNIK SINNER: Of course, nerves. I just tried to stay relax. People see me, everyone says that I'm relaxed, but I'm not because I'm human being and we are nervous. We have a lot of pressure.

Yeah, I think for us the singles are very, very important because I think we have great singles players. We can make changeups, as well, with Fognini, with Musetti. Obviously me and Sonego. Everybody is a great player.

You know, honestly there was a little bit pressure, but it's normal. Of course, when you go in and you make maybe the first break, you feel a little bit better. Today it was like this.

It's not like a normal match day, for sure.
