AL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES: ASTROS VS RED SOX

October 18, 2021

Zack Greinke

Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Fenway Park

Houston Astros

Postgame 3 Press Conference

Red Sox 12, Astros 3

Q. Zack, Dusty has told us you are only stretched out to around 40 or so pitches. Is that accurate, and how long do you think you could go tomorrow? How many innings do you think you can give up?

ZACK GREINKE: We'll see. I haven't gone real deep recently and we'll just see what happens, and we'll be ready, and we'll go from there.

Q. You look at this situation coming into a game where the team desperately needs solid starting pitching right off the bat?

ZACK GREINKE: It's a tough team we're facing. Swinging good, and, I mean, just try to make pitches. Whole career has been based around trying to make pitches, and that's all you can do, and they got a pretty tough lineup over there, and the better pitches you make, the better chances you have. More mistakes you make, the worse your success will probably be.

Q. Zack, having not pitched in the postseason, a strep of a couple of weeks now what are you been doing to stay conditioned and continuing to keep your arm fresh?

ZACK GREINKE: I pitched one inning a little bit ago, so I have pitched. Been playing catch every day, and just not much you can do, I guess, but should be good. Should be good to go.

Q. Have you thrown any bullpens since Chicago?

ZACK GREINKE: Yes.

Q. How many pitches, I guess, did you throw in that bullpen, and will it help you tomorrow to just be able to go through your full routine?

ZACK GREINKE: I don't really remember how many pitches. It was just your normal bullpen, getting ready like any other outing. Kind of planning on starting and throwing more -- I mean, not just one inning or whatever is asked. Just trying to get ready to do what is possible.

Q. Zack, what does it mean to you to get this opportunity to help the team in this situation?

ZACK GREINKE: It's big. I mean, it's an important part. I mean, great group of guys here. Some of the best guys that I've been around, and it's an important game, so I'll do what I can. Hopefully help us out.

Q. Zack, obviously, the Red Sox have had a lot of success these last few games. What stands out to you about their at-bats and just why it's been so hard to get them out?

ZACK GREINKE: That's a really good question. I don't want to try to give away any tips I possibly can to what we're thinking over here and to help them out, so those are good questions, but I'm not comfortable answering it.
