THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 30, 2021

Yoshihito Nishioka

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

Y. NISHIOKA/J. Isner

7-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You have waited a long time for that victory. What was the difference today? How did you finally manage to win?

YOSHIHITO NISHIOKA: Well, everybody know it's very tough to beat Isner on this surface. It's very different the style of the tennis, you know. He have the big serve, big shot. But I don't have it. So I have to use my, you know, technique or the speed, you know.

I saw the stats after the match, and he track 87 winner, but I hit only 29 winner. Then unforced errors also the difference. I just mishit 18 but he mishit 70.

It's very, very stressful for me, this match. Maybe for his, as well. But I have to hold the service game every time, because he got the break me the earlier, he don't have any pressure on his service game, which is not easy to break his service game.

But, you know, the end, the last game the match today, I think he had a little bit pressure, because his game is a little bit tight. Then finally I find the way, but I think that's the only way to beat him on this court and just try to holding service game and pressure him, and then let's see what's gonna happen.

So in this time, yes, I got the important point every time, but not for sure the next time (smiling).

Q. You say it was stressful. Did you still manage to enjoy it?

YOSHIHITO NISHIOKA: Well, yeah. I mean, I enjoy the play today, but, you know, it's very, very stressful for on my service game every time. He can play the big -- you know, he can hit winner from anywhere.

So, you know, I have to make a lot service. If I hitting second serve he can play very aggressive. So very, very stressful, you know. He just coming to the net, I got the pressure. That means stressful on my service game.

Q. I have been reading you're a big football fan. Wonder if you've been inspired by watching any of the European Championships and seeing some of the underdog teams getting big victories in the football.

YOSHIHITO NISHIOKA: Well, yeah, I mean, this is big win for me. So I don't know about the football, but I know they playing right now, but, well, yeah, I mean, this is biggest win in my career right now, because first win in Wimbledon today. It's against Isner, which is very tough player.

So, yeah, I mean, this is very, very big for me, my career. Then I think we have the match tomorrow. Also hopefully I can be on the third round again.

Q. What next for you? Who have you got in the next round?

YOSHIHITO NISHIOKA: I play against Bedene.

Q. What's your record like against him?

YOSHIHITO NISHIOKA: We don't know each other that well, because we never played before, but I know he play very -- I think he's very play very -- I think he's very fit on this court. I think he love to play on like a faster court.

So I'm not sure about it, but I guess, because he beat Moutet today 4, 4, and 0, which is a good score, I think. So for sure it's not easy match again tomorrow, as well. It's very, very different. Today the big server, but tomorrow should be many groundstrokes, and then we have to figure out to get in the points, and I have to making the point every time.

It's very different style tomorrow, but, you know, I got a win today and I have confidence. We'll see what's gonna happen tomorrow, as well.
