THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 2, 2021

Daniel Evans

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

S. KORDA/D. Evans

6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Can you give us your thoughts, maybe what went wrong for you out there trying to battle back towards the end. I guess he was too strong in that fourth set.

DANIEL EVANS: I actually, you know, think I played the better tennis in the fourth set. I had chances. I was a break up. I just couldn't string tennis together in long enough periods of time. Same with the third set, I think. Got broke, then broke back I think, then got broke again, something like that.

Yeah, it's difficult. Yeah, it's more disappointment than anything really right now. Yeah, it was a good chance to have a decent run. I think I didn't turn up really. It's difficult, yeah.

Q. From what you're saying, you feel this was a missed opportunity, that you could have still been going deep into this tournament. That must be a frustration as well because you've got it in you.

DANIEL EVANS: Well, I have to win that match obviously to go any deeper than I obviously did. But I just didn't think I played a good match. That obviously hinders me from winning the match. Never know what can happen next match, but...

Yeah, it's disappointing really. Yeah. Amazing court to play on, great atmosphere. Didn't get my game on the court. All credit to him, he played some strong tennis. Yeah, he's obviously going to be a very good player. So it was not a great day.

Q. It's obviously the third time you've gone out in the third round at Wimbledon. Mentally when you go into third- round matches, does it feel different? Do you feel more pressure? Is it just a case of not delivering on the day?

DANIEL EVANS: No, I didn't think anything about -- I didn't know I'd lost third round before twice or whatever it is. Didn't think anything of it.

Prepared for the match properly. Yeah, I just haven't been, in the big moments today, I wasn't able to bring my tennis and he was. That's where the match was won or lost I think. It was clear to see I was getting a little frustrated, as well.

Q. You said you didn't really show up today. Can you sort of put your finger on why that wasn't the case? Were you nervous today? What was it?

DANIEL EVANS: No, I felt pretty good. I just think maybe I was a little defensive, let him play the tennis. But, you know, that probably would have been my frustration last time I lost in 2019. So, yeah, it's difficult. He plays good tennis.

It's a tough one to take really. I didn't really play my game. I think I went to the net a handful of times. That's not going to -- that's not the best version of myself, yeah.

Q. Can it be difficult for a British player playing on Centre Court? Do you feel that sense of heightened expectation? When the game does start to go against you, does that make it harder to strike back?

DANIEL EVANS: No. I'm massively appreciative of the Club for putting me on Centre. It would have been easy to put me on Court 1 or whatever other court. Really enjoyed the atmosphere. It was great.

I just think, yeah -- I didn't feel any more pressure because I was playing on Centre. He probably played the better tennis today, was a bit more aggressive than me. That was the difference.

I mean, from the inside of the match it felt like a decent level, but I don't think there was much tight tennis in there. It wasn't about the pressure, it was just I didn't play as well as I could have really.

Q. You had a lot of support on the court today. Does it feel like a home crowd spurs you on or does it contribute to pressure, would you say?

DANIEL EVANS: No, it's great to have the home crowd. Really enjoyed it. All my matches have been good atmospheres. It's nice to have everybody back, yeah.
