THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 3, 2021

Marin Cilic

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

D. MEDVEDEV/M. Cilic

6-7, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. The first two sets you did very well. Which way was the turning point? Could you tell us?

MARIN CILIC: Yeah, turning point was I think even the challenge that I did at 2-All, the first point, Daniil made the return and I hit almost a winner. Just before the point finished, I called for a challenge and missed that one.

So the game went into a long one, and also missed the last ball by probably less than a millimeter and lost my serve. From that point on, I just couldn't find a great range in my serve.

That was also until end of the match a little bit of a difficulty for me. I was not able to get some free points on my serve.

Daniil, I mean, when he gets on a roll he plays his best tennis. He was serving good, and obviously he's not gonna miss long rallies. Especially when you are playing on my second serve and he was there really, really solid.

Yeah, unfortunately I didn't have much help from my serve in these last two-and-a-half sets. Yeah, definitely disappointed with that. But first couple sets were really, really high quality tennis.

Q. Would you tell me, how do you think Medvedev's play style?

MARIN CILIC: Yeah, Daniil is playing really good. He's definitely in good form. He won last week, and, you know, when he gets really on the roll, he did that for few times already in his career, when he gets on a roll he can play really well. Definitely is gonna be a tough player to beat here at Wimbledon.

Q. I interviewed your coach, Ivanisevic, before, few years ago. He told me you are his favorite. What's your next expectation? What's your next target?

MARIN CILIC: Yeah, now going back home, and I'm going to probably play Olympics. That's gonna be my fourth Olympics. Probably playing doubles with Ivan Dodig and singles as well. That should be fun.

We will see how the procedures are going to be in Japan with these protocols around COVID. It's going to be very unusual to play there, but we'll see. It's gonna be definitely nice to play another Olympics and try to win a medal.
