Quick Quotes

Q. Here with Nanna Koerstz Madsen who just shot a 2-under 70. Looks a bit of a roller coaster round for you, but you survived. What's your big takeaway from your first round today?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: My putting. I was making a lot of putts out there. Yeah, I had some bumps out there that was kind of expensive. Yeah.

Q. But you still did have a lot of good shots. Opened up with three birdies in a row. Great way to open a round. Tell us about those.

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: Yeah, like second and third are a little tricky holes. You can easily hit in the water or something and make a bad start, so I was just really happy with 3-under after three, being away from those holes. Long way until there was water again.

Yeah, I don't know, it was fine.

Q. Still a solid way to start a major. Overall are you happy with the way you played today?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: Yeah. I had some bad shots on the back nine, so I'm definitely going to go to the range, hit my driver, see if I can fix a little bit for tomorrow.

If I continue putting well then I'll be happy.

Q. You had that triple. How did you recover from that? What did you tell yourself mentally?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: Well, I got mad, but I was still -- I wasn't -- it's not like I was missing the cut or anything. I was still up there.

So I was just trying to keep playing good. If I could finish with one birdie it was still a good round.

Q. I was watching you on nine. That was an impressive up and down. Fairway bunker then from the bunker. That shot from the bunker on the green, you plan it like that? If you did, can you describe it?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: Well, I was kind of aggressive on it. I had to land it in the rough for it to stop. It was no chance it was going to stop if I landed on the greens, so I just tried and it was aggressive.

Q. And it worked.

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: It worked, yeah.

Q. There has been plenty of rain here. It's playing long. As you played this course in practice rounds, did it look like a place where you could make seven birdies?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: I would say I made the birdies because of my putting. I did hit some close, but I still had to make the putts. But you can find the birdies. I have a lot -- not a lot, but I do have some wedges out there, which was actually one who cost me the bad ones today.

So I see the birdies out there, especially when the greens are soft as they are. Yeah.

Q. On the triple did you have wedge?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: Yes.

Q. Short?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: I chunked it in the water and next one over in the bunker and didn't make up and down.

Q. What were the lengths of the birdie putts on the first three holes?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: Two meters, three meters, and a gimme, tap-in.

Q. And you had a little time to sit off to the side after the triple. The camera was on you. I don't know if you noticed that. What were you thinking about? How were you regrouping mentally?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: Not really anything to do. It's still the first round. There is a lot of golf to be played. If I was going to lose it out there, then there is a lot of holes left. Yeah, I just had to keep going.

Q. There have been a lot of players of late that have made a major their first LPGA victory. Have you paid attention to that, and do you feel like you could be that next person?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: I mean, I definitely think I can win at one point if I get it all together. So, I mean, it could be this week; could be another week.

Hopefully will come one day.

Q. Did you come in putting well or find something this week?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: I was so stressed about my putting the last three days. Then I spoke with my coach yesterday and we found a little bit that could help me and it worked.

Q. What was your adjustment?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: It was just a little bit in setup. I had too much going on with the stroke, so it was just trying to make it simple and just have one thought.

Q. Is it pretty amazing how something like that can flip so quickly?

NANNA KOERSTZ MADSEN: Yeah, in putting I think it's a lot about trusting the putt and feel like you have the right speed on the greens, so a lot of thoughts are not good on putting.
