CINCH CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 20, 2021

Matteo Berrettini

London, England, UK

Queens Club

Press Conference

M. BERRETTINI/C. Norrie

6-4, 6-7, 6-3

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Many congratulations. You had a tremendous week. Your service game was exemplary from the first round. Talk about how you played here at Queen's.

MATTEO BERRETTINI: Yeah, it was definitely really good week. I mean, when you win a tournament, it means that you're playing good, but I think during the tournament, after every match I was increasing my level.

I think today I had to play my best tennis, especially in the important points, to win, because I think Cameron played a great match. He's really tricky. He's lefty. His ball is like not bouncing a lot. He made me work a lot.

And nothing. I'm really happy with my performance overall.

Q. Well done. I think that when you played Wimbledon in 2019 it was the first time you made second week of a slam.

MATTEO BERRETTINI: Yeah.

Q. Was that a big thing in your career? What do you think you can do at Wimbledon this year?

MATTEO BERRETTINI: I mean, I thought it was great. I thought that I had the chance to play against Roger in Centre Court in Wimby, that was like my dream since I was a kid. So I really enjoyed, even though I lost pretty easy.

It was a great achievement obviously, but then I think that match helped me a lot for the next slams, especially US Open. That was the one right after.

And now, I mean, I have a lot of confidence. Like I said when I came before this tournament, I know that I'm playing well. I played a lot of matches. I am pushing myself, all the conditions and stuff. I'm really happy the way my mindset is, because I'm really focused. I know, like you ask me, I know that I can play good in Wimby.

I know that the conditions are different, it's best-of-five. I think all the players have a little bit extra motivation, you know, when you go to a slam for so many reasons, but I couldn't think of anything better than this going to Wimby.

Q. What was it that you took from the Roger match particularly?

MATTEO BERRETTINI: I mean, I took it in a way that it wasn't about my tennis. It was about my mindset. I just saw my idol at the other of side of the net, and I couldn't focus. I was just overwhelmed, I guess (smiling). I don't know.

I talking in a way that that was it, that was fine because I'm human, and the next time that I play him and in general when I played like important match I was definitely more ready, and I knew what could happen and I made it not happen, I guess.

Q. Congratulations. On July the 11th there are two very big finals in London: one in Wembley and one at Wimbledon. Do you think you can be part of a famous Italian win double?

MATTEO BERRETTINI: (Laughter.) I really hope so and for my country in general. I think it would be such an historic day.

But it's a long thought. I mean, there are so many stats for me and for the guys that I think they are about to step in, so good luck to them, good luck to myself, and we see what's gonna happen.

Q. Which is your Italian football team?

MATTEO BERRETTINI: Fiorentina, from Florence.
