CINCH CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 20, 2021

Gordon Reid

London, England, UK

Queens Club

Press Conference

G. REID/G. Fernandez

6-2, 6-2

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Well done. Another title in the bag and another grass court title in the bag. You seemed to chip away against Gusty's power throughout that whole final. Was that the tactic going in?

GORDON REID: Yeah, obviously on the grass the slice becomes more effective, shoots through the court a little bit more. I think that posed a lot of problems for Gustavo today with that shot.

So I'm pleased with the way I hit that. Yeah, I think tactically I got it pretty spot on today.

Q. You mentioned yesterday that you felt you were a bit slower coming out at the beginning of the semifinal. What was the difference going into today's match? Because you just seemed, felt like all the time that match was on your racquet really.

GORDON REID: Yeah, I think I had a pretty good idea of what I was planning to do. Just kept it really simple at the beginning.

Also, just more time on grass now, obviously a match firmly under my belt yesterday. So all those things added together just make me feel more comfortable when you first go out there.

Q. For you, you're always a player who looks cool, calm, and collected on court. We get a few little "Come ons," but you're playing Gusty who pretty much wears his heart on his sleeve. You could see at moments you were frustrating him. Do you not sometimes want to kind of smile a little bit when you know you have kind of succeeded in your match plan?

GORDON REID: Oh, it's never over till it's over, so I don't want to smile too early. Yeah, obviously if I'm frustrating him, then I'm doing something right.

You know, that's part of the plan is to try and frustrate him with my tennis and my style. Yeah, maybe I'm smiling inside sometimes, but...

Q. Going into Wimbledon now, this must give you confidence to get out there on the grass courts. How do the grass courts at Wimbledon differ from the grass courts here? These are quite fast courts, aren't they?

GORDON REID: Yeah, these are fast. Court 1 today a little bit less than the other courts we have been playing on. It's been played on a little bit more I think through the week.

Yeah, normally Wimbledon, still a lot of matches on there before we get there and may be a little bit slower. Courts here are great courts. There has been really good preparation. Yeah, it's obviously good to get a title to build the confidence on the grass before getting to Wimbledon.

Q. Finally, we talked yesterday, now surely you winning the title has to top golf for your dad's Father's Day present?

GORDON REID: I only asked him, but he actually said he enjoyed the match. That's a good start (smiling).

Q. That was a very clinical performance for you today. How did you see it?

GORDON REID: Yeah, I thought it was a pretty tidy performance. I think tactically I got it spot on and just executed the game plan very convincingly. I served pretty steady. Returned to the right spots. I think all those things just gave me a good chance out there to do well.

Q. Given how many times you have played Gustavo, I think this is 46 times now, first time on grass, is there any difference playing him on grass to any other surface?

GORDON REID: Yeah, just obviously the differences on grass courts for every player, but for me I like to use the slice and the backhand, and it becomes more effective on the grass. I think it can cause a lot of damage.

For me, I think that's one shot that worked really well today. I'll look at that, watch the match back obviously with my coach. Yeah, look to what we can keep improving before getting back on the grass in a couple weeks.

Q. How does it feel to be world No. 2 in your home country and win a title at such a prestigious event?

GORDON REID: Yeah, it's a great feeling. You know, just being around here on the grounds, you see all the title winners, title winners from over the years, and there are some iconic names on there stretching back a long time.

It's great that the wheelchair event is here now and that we're part of such a great event with so much history. Yeah, it's amazing to be on there as one of the winners now as well.
