U.S. AMATEUR FOUR-BALL

May 26, 2021

Devin Johnson

Tyler Anderson

University Place, Washington, USA

Chambers Bay

Quick Quotes

Q. That was quite the match. Boy, your opponent goes birdie-birdie-birdie and sinks two bombs on you on the 17th and 19th. That's a gut punch.

DEVIN JOHNSON: That 18th hole wasn't short, either.

Q. It was six feet.

DEVIN JOHNSON: No. Was it six feet?

TYLER ANDERSON: I thought it was longer.

Q. The one McDougall made? No, it was six, seven feet. It wasn't real long.

TYLER ANDERSON: Either way, they made a lot of putts coming in.

Q. Obviously disappointed you're not in the final, but talk about your week. First USGA championship, you guys get all the way to the Final Four of this.

TYLER ANDERSON: Yeah, it was pretty cool. No event like I've ever played in before has been like this, so it was one for the books for sure.

DEVIN JOHNSON: I mean, obviously coming out here and making it to the semifinals, I'm really happy with that. I'm sure I'll look back at that and take it as an accomplishment, but for now, we lost, and we've still got things to work on.

Q. What do you think you learned from playing a four-ball, and especially a match play event? You guys don't play a ton of this format and don't play a ton of match play, either.

DEVIN JOHNSON: Match play is a lot different because you're actually playing against the opponent that's in your group, so like scores can be like inflated or deflated. People can push each other to shoot better or worse. If you look at the match today, both teams -- it wasn't really back and forth, it was one team got on a roll, the other team got on a roll, so it's a lot like that, and it's not --

TYLER ANDERSON: I'd say just the momentum is a lot bigger factor in match play. Whoever has momentum at the right time or on certain shots just has that little extra advantage.

Q. Seems like so much more mental in match play versus stroke play.

TYLER ANDERSON: It's a lot more mental, I think, in match play, knowing you're not only playing for yourself but your partner.

Q. Plus you carried your own bag.

TYLER ANDERSON: Yeah.

Q. How tired are you?

TYLER ANDERSON: I'm not that tired. I didn't really have a problem with that.

Q. Obviously you'll look back and say you got to the semis but I'm sure this will sting for a few days. When you lose like that when your opponent goes birdie-birdie-birdie on you --

TYLER ANDERSON: There's no doubt about that. I didn't hit a bad shot on 18, and for that break to happen at that time was just unfortunate, but nothing you can do about it now.

Q. I saw that, probably about two feet of --

TYLER ANDERSON: We controlled what we could control and went as far as we could. We're looking forward to coming back next year -- not coming back, but competing against next year.

Q. Well, you guys are exempt for two years now?

DEVIN JOHNSON: For two years? Sweet. We get to go to Kiawah Island.
