PURE SILK CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY VISIT WILLIAMSBURG

May 20, 2021

Lauren Coughlin

Williamsburg, Virginia, USA

Kingsmill River Course

Quick Quotes

Q. A 1-under par 70. Great start. Birdies at 1, 3, 13, and 14.

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Uh-huh.

Q. Any one of those stand out in helping get you started en route to the 1-under?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: I mean, it was nice to hit it -- hit it to about three feet on 1, so always nice to start out with a birdie.

But I kind of stalled out a little bit there on 8 and 10. Made a couple bogeys, but then hit a really, really good shot on 13 to like two feet. That kind of got me going again.

Q. A little adrenaline on 1?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Just a little bit, yeah, for sure. But I hit a good drive so I was really -- I was definitely nervous, but in a good way.

Q. How did it feel just teeing up in your home event, just the emotion that came with it maybe, especially having to wait so long today being in the afternoon? How did the day evolve for you?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, it was good. I was a lot more anxious in Hawaii for sure. Again, it was like a nervous but it was more like an excitement and just excited to get out there. I definitely think I was kind of jacked up from 1 through 3 for sure. I definitely could kind of feel it.

But, yeah, it's really great. My high school golf coach came and watched today; a guy that I play golf with a bunch came and watched today, a girl from the UVA team came and watched. It was really cool having -- my husband is here as well. Sorry, I almost forgot.

He's always there. He's fine.

But, yeah, it was really cool having everybody come out and support.

Q. This is your third start in this event, first time you shot under par in the first round. Does that lead to a different mentality heading into day two and hopefully the weekend?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, definitely. I hit the ball extremely well today. I have really been stressing about my putter and it felt really good today as well. It got tough there towards the end. The greens really firmed up and the wind picked up so it made it a lot more difficult.

Yeah, so I'm excited to get out again in the morning and keep it going.

Q. How challenging was the wind today? I would imagine on the back nine it can get a little swirly and pretty challenging.

LAUREN COUGHLIN: For sure, and then they had some tough pins too, especially coming in. Like 16, 17 were pretty wild and so just -- I was just trying to hit it on the green in a safe spot and I did.

Yeah, I mean, it was tough for sure. It was swirling. It wasn't doing what it was supposed to be doing, so it was guessing and we were guessing pretty good.
