WALKER CUP

May 8, 2021

Pierceson Coody

Charles Coody

Juno Beach, Florida, USA

Seminole Golf Club

Golf Channel Interview

Q. With Pierceson Coody and his grandfather, Charles Coody. First let's start with the star of the show in this first match, getting that point for the United States. You didn't play this morning, Pierceson. How hard was it to harness the energy and get out there today in the afternoon to compete?

PIERCESON COODY: After being sick for about 24, 36 hours, I thought it would be tough, but to say the club -- it felt a little light this morning, or this afternoon. It was really easy to get going. It went as smoothly as it could, as sick as we all were a couple days ago.

Q. What's it like having grandpa here watching you play in the Walker Cup?

PIERCESON COODY: The things he's accomplished in golf is everything that I want to be able to accomplish, so having him come to my tournaments is amazing. It's really special.

Q. Charles, you did a lot of things in this game. What would you say it's like watching your grandson trying to compete at a high level versus when you were trying to win tournaments?

CHARLES COODY: It was a lot easier to play. Trying to watch the people labor over a five-foot putt knowing how difficult it is when the pressure is on and everything, just watching this boy play is a real pleasure. He's a fighter.

Q. Talking to Pierceson, he has a lot of respect for you, not only love as a grandfather but also all the things you did in this sport. Are you a hands-on type of person when you are around Pierceson and his game, or do you feel like the best approach for you is to take your foot off the gas?

CHARLES COODY: I've kind of been asked to stay away a little bit, so I obey the instructions. He's got a lot of natural ability, so I just let that natural ability take hold.
