Jenny Shin

Kapolei, Hawaii, USA

Kapolei Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. All right, Jenny, take me through this fire round here on the fourth day.

JENNY SHIN: Well, I started with three great birdies. Made -- first two putts were not short so they were a great momentum picking up.

And I had troubles on two holes, 11 and 12, so -- no, it was 12 and 13. I handled that well. Got up and down; made par.

I think that was a huge deal for me. I was able to make a birdie, two birdies closing in, so it was a great day overall.

Q. This is a wonderful place to be doing some pretty nice rounds. What did you learn about your game over the past three rounds that really catapulted you today?

JENNY SHIN: I left a lot of putts and a lot of birdies out there, yesterday especially, and kind of over -- looking back at my round yesterday afternoon, I was like, I left a lot out there and I still shot 5-under par.

I think 10-under par is completely doable. When I saw myself rolling putts I was like, Today is it. I'm going to go as low as I can.

Q. With nothing to lose it really feels like.

JENNY SHIN: Yeah, I know, right? Like 3-under seems like even par here, so my main focus today was to obviously not lose focus and be in the moment the whole time, and I think I did a good job doing that.

Q. Only took 24 putts to get you through today. Is that something you've been working on, putting or second-shot approach into the green?

JENNY SHIN: Definitely. My greens in regulation stat in the past five years have been pretty horrible and Jorge and I started working last year and it's been really paying off.

So it definitely has been helping to hit a lot more greens, give myself a lot more chances for birdies, and I did that starting in Lake Nona. I finished top 10. I hit really great shots the entire week.

So with that momentum building, got a new putter this year. Paul and Scott did an amazing job building that putter for me and it's been great.

Q. 62 was the tournament record. Was that on your mind at all?

JENNY SHIN: Oh, yeah. That last putt I wanted it so badly and I hit it a little bit too firm and I was just like, Oh, my gosh.

I didn't really know where I was coming down until the last few holes. I was starting to count and I was like, Where am I? I really need to birdie the last two holes.

I did that yesterday, so I thought could totally be a possibility. Did the best I could, but, yeah, maybe not today.

Q. After playing at Ko Olina before coming to this course and they only had a month to get it ready, what were your impressions of the way the course played this week and were you impressed with the conditions?

JENNY SHIN: Yeah, I was telling my caddie and my boyfriend as well, because he grew up on this golf course. I said, This is a public golf course, and to have this kind of condition on the greens was really surprising.

I thought -- I know it's the same course designer for Ko Olina and here. I did see a lot of resemblance, but I felt like it was a better layout for us.

Like to me, Ko Olina, No. 18 wasn't very practical finishing hole because you can't hit driver, you can't hit 3-wood; got to layup with a hybrid and then give yourself a really difficult shot for the 2nd hole, and that second shot a straight downwind, you know.

But this golf course, it's fun to watch because so many players are going low. So I really, really enjoyed playing this golf course and the conditions were pretty immaculate.

Q. Did you say your boyfriend grew up here?

JENNY SHIN: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's right there. Yeah, so I told him that we're playing Kapolei and he was like, Oh, I grew up on that golf course. I was like, Tell me all about it.

But turns out it's not that different from Ko Olina. Just played my game; worked out.

Q. A little advance scouting report?

JENNY SHIN: Didn't get much. (Laughter.) So, yeah.

Q. 9-under round. How satisfying is that for all the work you've been putting in as we head onto the onslaught of tournaments coming up?

JENNY SHIN: I'm looking forward to my Asia events. I've done pretty well in both Thailand and Singapore. This is a really good, and I look forward to it. So it's a great opening of my four-week run.
