MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 11, 2021

Jose Maria Olazabal

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. How can winning this tournament change your life?

JOSÉ MARÍA OLAZÁBAL: Well, I don't know if it will change your life, but it will change your career. I mean, I think we have to differentiate those two areas. I think life, it depends on the player. I think the player can stay the same way he was before after winning the Masters, but no question that your career is determined by the number of majors that you win, and in that case scenario, whenever you win your major event, it's a great relief, and it puts you in a different level.

Q. As an international champion, when you went home to Spain for the first time with the green jacket, what was that like?

JOSÉ MARÍA OLAZÁBAL: Oh, it was very special, obviously. The media attention was huge, but well, it goes with it. It's natural. Major events are difficult to win, and when you do so, it's great news. It doesn't matter if you are Spanish or Japanese or Chinese. It's going to be huge for Hideki if he manages to win the Masters.

Q. Tell us about this week. Something, no?

JOSÉ MARÍA OLAZÁBAL: A special week, yes. Really proud of making the cut. Happy the way I played. It's true that I mis-hit a few shots here and there that cost me dearly, especially today on 7 and 8, but the rest of the round I played solid today. It was pretty much the same all week long, and in that regard, I take quite a few positive things from this week. Great to be here at the weekend.

Q. I was remembering in 2014 Miguel Angel played well here, the next week he had a tournament on the Champions Tour, and he was like a bull. Do you feel like --

JOSÉ MARÍA OLAZÁBAL: Well, I hope it will happen to me, but I still need to improve certain areas of my game, mainly the driver. It's true that I hit a lot of fairways this week, but still not as sharp as the rest of the game, and that's the area that I need to improve on, but if I do that, the rest of the game at least this week was pretty nice.

Q. How do you feel for the Champions Tour? Are you going to play a few events now?

JOSÉ MARÍA OLAZÁBAL: Well, the idea is to play a few events, mainly the whole Champions Tour, if it could be provides some rest in some way, and the idea is to play as much as possible on the Champions Tour and see if I can somehow enjoy the game as I did this week.
