MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 9, 2021

Mike Weir

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. How would you sum up that round today, Mike?

MIKE WEIR: It was a really solid round. I had a really good ball-striking round. A lot of shots that could have been really good. I was probably a foot too long on 14 from being a tap-in and a foot too short from maybe having a nice eagle putt on 15.

If you're on either side of that you get some good momentum going, but that seemed to be my week. I hit some really nice shots this week that looked good that ended up not getting close to the hole. But that's what makes this place special and difficult, is not all your good shots turn out the way you think. You have to get the right bounce.

But today I played very well. I made that putt on the last hole that was basically all I made today. I made about a six-footer on No. 3 for birdie and that was it. If I could have putted a little better, it would have been a really good score.

Q. How would you contrast the two days in terms of difficulty on the course?

MIKE WEIR: Yeah, much more difficult yesterday afternoon with the firmness of the golf course and the swirling winds. For me hitting mid-irons into these greens, it's a bit easier if you're a little longer. That's a day where being a little longer helps a lot. You hit a lofted club into some of these greens, and when you're coming in with 6- and 7-irons the ball had no chance to stop.

Today a little more overcast, the moisture stayed in the grass, and you could get the ball to stop a little bit better.

Q. I can tell you're a little frustrated with the score and everything, but is it still fun to play here?

MIKE WEIR: Yeah, I'm frustrated. I was very happy with my game that I drove the ball great, played very well. I think just a little bit of rust. Being a month off, I would have loved to have had a tournament coming in.

My first nine holes wasn't very good, so that tournament rusty think showed up the first day and then I found my groove and played very nicely. Overall it's always great to be here and play here.

Q. What's next?

MIKE WEIR: We play next week in Naples on the Champions Tour, Tiburón course where we played the Shark Shootout. Although I think it's the other course, but the Champions Tour kind of gets rolling after next week, so looking forward to the summer.

Q. Juiced about that?

MIKE WEIR: Yeah, for sure.

Q. You played with a couple guys who are new to this Masters thing. One is playing in his second, one playing in his first. Did they ask you any questions or did you feel like they were watching a former champion a little closely?

MIKE WEIR: Not necessarily. We had a nice round together, nice two rounds, and good conversation. Didn't talk too much. I guess maybe somewhere along the way they asked me -- someone asked me about when I won, when it was and what the course conditions were like when I won. Outside of that, this course gets your attention so much that we were pretty focused on our games.

Q. When you came as a Masters rookie, who did you kind of --

MIKE WEIR: I called Fred Couples. I called him up. Maybe we had played somewhere and I asked him to play a practice round and kind of show me around the place a little bit. So that's who I leaned on back in the day.

Q. So this is McIntyre's first Masters. What are your impressions of his game?

MIKE WEIR: Oh, he's got a great game. Very nice game. He fades the ball well, which for a lefty you need to do around here, and he putts really well. You know, yeah, he can do well here on the weekend.
