AUGUSTA NATIONAL WOMEN'S AMATEUR

April 1, 2021

Karen Fredgaard

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. A little chilly start but a pretty good finish there for you.

KAREN FREDGAARD: Thank you.

Q. How do you feel about the round? It's an early morning and you're coming back out.

KAREN FREDGAARD: It's a little hard coming back out. It plays completely different. I thought I could go for 18 green in two, but instead I had to layup for a 70-yard shot. It's pretty different, but it is what it is. It's golf.

Q. Did you like your result on 18?

KAREN FREDGAARD: Yeah, I loved it. That shot in there is hard. The pin is hard, like all the others on the back nine was yesterday.

Q. Can you talk about your preparation for this event back home? What particularly you worked on, shots.

KAREN FREDGAARD: I'm working on every part of the game. I've been working a lot mentally. Everything is just a part of the process and just keeping up. I played a lot of tournaments this fall with my college team, so we just played in Arizona for 11 days. So that's completely different than here. So everything got to be sharp out here on this course.

Q. How did you feel like you were playing coming in?

KAREN FREDGAARD: I mean, it was hard on the back nine. There are some holes out there where, if you make a bogey, that's a good score. If you make a par, it almost seems like a birdie. So I'm just taking it one shot by shot.

Q. What about yesterday, your round yesterday? You went off pretty late. Did you see any scores before you went off and have a pretty good idea it was going to be up with a lot of those scores?

KAREN FREDGAARD: No, I honestly didn't really look at it. I'm just taking it one shot by shot and trying to focus as much as I can on just my golf, and that's it.

Q. How was the ball flying this morning?

KAREN FREDGAARD: It was flying a lot shorter. I usually plan on hitting a 3 wood off the tee on 16, but I had to hit a driver today instead just because of the cold this morning. So it's just a part of adjusting to that, yeah.

Q. Is this the biggest tournament you've played, do you think?

KAREN FREDGAARD: Yes, for sure.

Q. Did you talk to like back home Stacy Lewis, she obviously plays on the biggest stage. Did she help you with everything?

KAREN FREDGAARD: Every time I have a chance to talk to Stacy, I talk to her. She helps me out a lot. She's awesome, a really big role model for me, but when everything comes to it, I'm just out here trying to play and hit one shot by shot. That's it.

Q. What was the best tip Stacy's ever given you?

KAREN FREDGAARD: She's helped me out a lot with the drives and trying, instead of just curving the ball on every shot, just hit the straight shot and see that straight shot every time, trying to focus on where to hit it instead of where not to hit it.

Q. That's big here.

KAREN FREDGAARD: For sure, yeah.

Q. How did you feel like you were playing coming into this week?

KAREN FREDGAARD: I didn't really play that much coming into this week. I played in Arizona, but that's a couple of weeks ago now. I just practiced and kept up with my schedule and stuff like that. Took it pretty calm.

Q. What were your expectations going in?

KAREN FREDGAARD: Just enjoy the ride. This is a great honor, so just have fun and enjoy being here. My parents came all the way from Europe, and I haven't seen them in a long time. So I just enjoy being here a lot.

Q. When was the last time you saw them?

KAREN FREDGAARD: I was home for a short period of time, ten days for Christmas, but with COVID and everything, it wasn't really the true Christmas experience, so having them here is really, really great. So that's awesome, yeah.

Q. Does having a good opening round take some of the pressure off of the second round, seeing you're in pretty good position now?

KAREN FREDGAARD: I don't really think about it that much. Honestly, I'm just going to go out and see how it goes. It's a completely different day today. So it can't compare. Today isn't like yesterday, so it's going to be completely different. We'll see what happens.

Q. What do you do now? Do you go back to your room and rest a little bit?

KAREN FREDGAARD: I don't know. I'm kind of hungry. I might get some food or take a nap or something like that, stretch out a bit.

Q. How has your experience been so far?

KAREN FREDGAARD: It's been awesome. Just being here, seeing some of my friends from Europe that are here too. It's just a great, great honor, and being able to go to the clubhouse and see everything out there. I can't wait for tomorrow to get out there. It's my first time ever. So it's great. It's a great, great honor.

Q. Did you look at the leader board at all coming in?

KAREN FREDGAARD: No, ma'am. No.

Q. Did you see where you are now?

KAREN FREDGAARD: No, I haven't even seen it. I was focusing on writing my scores.

Q. Do you want to know where you are?

KAREN FREDGAARD: Yeah. Where am I?

Q. First.

KAREN FREDGAARD: Oh, okay. Great. Well, anything can happen.
