NBA 2K LEAGUE DRAFTFebruary 22, 2020John "JBM" MasconeNew York, New York Q. When were you notified by the Wizards that they were going to take you? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: It's funny, like two minutes before, and the whole funny thing about this was it was a toss-up between about like three people. It was back and forth throughout the week. Honestly, if you asked me this an hour ago, I would have -- I didn't, and that's what made it so much more surreal. I'm super grateful to be here. But to answer your question, two minutes before. Q. Can you say and spell your name and gamer tag? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: Yeah, so my name is John M-a-s-c-o-n-e, and my gamer tag is JBM. My middle name is Brian, so it's just my initials. Q. I spoke to a couple of the veteran players in the league and asked their thoughts on you, and they said you're fiery, good trash talker, very young. What does that mean to you? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: I mean, I'll take it as it is. I think they see a little bit of vulnerability, and that is what it is, and I'm kind of here to prove them wrong. I'm definitely comfortable talking on the stage and getting my point across when it needs to get across to the other team, but I'm here to win, and that's the goal. Q. What do you bring to Wizards? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: I think I'll be a leader, someone who's going to get all five guys to invest in our goal and what we're working towards, and I think that's the basis of all this, just kind of just having that, having that common ground, and from there - the sky's the limit. Q. You mentioned you just found out two minutes beforehand, but you've never had communication with the Wizards. What have they told you about what they liked out of you? What do you bring? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: I think Dayfri, who's their center, who's their star player, we have a lot in common. He's fiery, as well. I think they think that we would feed off each other, which I believe we will. I believe that's what's going to happen. I'm excited for it. I've been in contact with them, but as I said, I was never really sure. There was like three people in the air, and it's nice to just see things come full circle. Q. From the time your name was called to when you got up on stage, what was going through your mind? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: You know, those six seconds of like walking from the chair to the stairs, I kind of just looked at Brendan Donohue, like all right, this is my target point. I was kind of overwhelmed. But everything was good, and the league does such a nice job with the setup, and I'm just super grateful to be here. Q. You talked about maybe how your personality meshes with Dayfri. How about on the court since you guys are going to be a duo now; how do you think you fit together? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: I think we're going to fit well. I think personality is kind of the key component to developing that relationship, and I think that's already there. I think the game play will come into its own, and having this much time to practice, I know how much he wants this, and I think we're equal in that. I think any kinks we'll get out in the first couple weeks of practice, and from there, who knows. Q. What do you think the expectations are going to be for the team now in season? Are you thinking Playoffs, championship? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: A hundred percent. We'll start with developing a common goal, something we're working towards week by week, and the end goal is the Playoffs. And from there we move forward, take it series by series, hopefully obviously a championship. Kind of just establishing those weekly goals and short-term goals, that will help us. Q. Has the draft day been what you expected it would be? JOHN "JBM" MASCONE: Yeah, you know, it's -- honestly, the league does such a good job. I got here at 9:00, we had a buffet breakfast at the Sheraton, had a super nice lunch, set us up with the credentials, we walked over here and we got a ride over here.
